Vehicle Description
1982 AMC Jeep CJ7
The Expediciones De Las Americas is the most badass road trip
you've never heard of... A couple of decades after starting the
Jamboree, Mark A. Smith led an expedition of Jeeps on the longest
off-road trip in history, trekking 21,000 miles over some of the
world's most inhospitable terrain, from the southernmost tip of
Chile to the northern reaches of Alaska. In the 4x4's first public
outing, it was driven up the steps of the U.S. Capitol. When asked
what it was, the driver replied simply, "It's a jeep." Two years
later, Willys-Overland filed a trademark application.
For consignment, a CJ (Civilian's Jeep) version 7 from 1982. This
frame off rotisserie restoration goes through a painstakingly
meticulous process down to every nut and bolt being weatherproof,
and plenty of add on to immerse yourself into this one. Here we
go!
Exterior
A thorough sandblasting then careful epoxy priming was performed on
every steel panel of this Jeep. Then it was top coated in miles
deep orange. Any chrome accenting was then sprayed black to add
contrast to the exterior. A Tomken stubby bumper was put on in
front, and it has a winch plate complete with a Ramsey 9K winch
with a remote. Black padding covers the roll cage and it sports a
canvas sunshade safari top. Consigner states that a tan colored
hardtop, and matching hardtop doors will come with the purchase.
33x10.5 knobby mud terrain tires are wrapping black Rock Wagon
wheel rims with locking hubs. A Tomken HD tire carrier with a 3/16
inch rear frame crossmember is holding an additional tire if you
get onto some real trouble! Black molded plastic wraps the bottom
of this Jeep and Rock Equipment perches help you climb into the
interior.
Interior
As we make our way through the doorless entry, we perch on top of
one of 2 Corbeau racing buckets covered in black vinyl. In back, a
Corbeau fold down bench is now installed. Between the buckets is a
like new lock box console/armrest. Upfront a like new metal orange
painted dash with a lineup of pulls, gauges and a killer Kenwood
sound system are all neatly mounted. The original steering wheel is
fronting this dash. Orange texture paint is reserved for the floors
and rear storage, making for an easy cleanup.
Drivetrain
As I loosen the front lockdowns, and raise the hood and I have
found a place to eat my lunch...yes it's that clean. Fully
restored, nice blue painted block, all new MSD ignition. We are
peering at a 258ci inline 6 cylinder engine and it is showroom
condition. It is topped by a Motorcraft 2100 2bbl carburetor, and
backed by a T5 5-speed manual transmission. In front there is a
Dana 30 axle, and on back an AMC 20 rear axle (2.73 ratio).
Consigner states that the clutch is new as are all bearings and
seals throughout. Woods provide the custom drive shafts now on.
Undercarriage
In keeping with the get tough theme, no stone has been left
unturned (or for that matter driven over!). Here we see a very
clean undercarriage. This features Old Man Emu suspension, lift kit
and shackles. There is now a stainless steel exhaust with a Thrush
muffler which has a wonderful sound when exhaling. Disc brakes are
in front, and drums for the back.
Drive-Ability
This beauty started right up and was ready to climb the walls and
anything else we had here at Classic Auto Mall that it could drive
over. So I took it to the test track and here all was functioning
beautifully. Good acceleration, plenty of power, all gearing 2 and
4 wheel drives were working , and the sound system was awesome. The
seats are comfy and in the open air one feels a sense of freedom,
although when a semi goes by it makes you think about that exterior
being right there!
A frame off restoration with even stainless nut and bolt kit were
used in the reassembly, along with plenty of other special add ons
and upgrades. Now we have a comfy, beautiful social climber, and
mountain climber that can go virtually anywhere. And where it will
not go, use the winch!
