Very early Pre-A Beehive Speedster built for the 1955-year model.
Delivered March 3, 1955 by Autohaus Kraus in Nurnberg, Germany.
According to the Kardex it was a European delivery and serviced at
the same dealer three times from March to April of 1955.
European Collectibles just completed a complete ground-up
restoration on this Speedster over the past 14 months. The
paintwork is simply stunning. Finished in its original color
combination of Speedster Blue (color code 602), with the interior
in the very rare Acella Bast (Basket Weave) with Blue piping. This
is complemented with German Tan square weave carpets, a dark blue
navy top, and boot cover. Very straight body with excellent gaps
and panel fit along with original floor pans and longitudinals.
Options include: high bow soft top, GT style louvered rear deck
lid, body molding delete, side deck delete, GT aluminum bumper
trim, GT seat rails, rear bench seat, and stone guard chrome
grills.
Mechanically, this Speedster is amazing to drive! The engine is a
flat-four Super-90 case (type 616/7) used for longevity and high
performance including the following components: SC crank, big valve
cylinder heads, Shasta barrels with JE 90mm pistons, Elgin cam, H
beam connecting rods, and balanced and blueprinted with a lightened
200mm flywheel. The driveline has been upgraded with a 1900cc
engine with approximately 120HP, an upgraded 741 manual 4-speed
transmission to handle the additional power, dropped front
spindles, and a ZF steering box. A front sway bar was also
installed along with a front disc brake conversion. The Pre-A rear
suspension has been upgraded to type T2 with Koni shocks and
Magnesium rims (15" x 5.5") with Vredstein Sprint Classic 185/70 15
tires.
Some of the details include original OEM restored square chrome
door handles, a shine down Hella license plate light, and the VDO
gauges which have been cleaned and restored. A new wiring harness
was installed and all of the electrical components have been
converted to a 12-volt system. Everything has been replaced or
restored. This Speedster drives like a dream and connects you to
the road like no other 356, as it is very fun to drive with plenty
of power, a smooth-shifting transmission, and great braking. If you
have been after a fun Speedster to drive look no further. Complete
with tools, jack, manual, side curtains, boot cover, and
Kardex.
