Vehicle Description
Vintage, beautiful, and distinct, this 1956 Buick Special Deluxe
Estate Wagon is one of those rare opportunities where a premium
classic that loves to turn heads is also a strong-runner that can
be taken to more places for everyone to enjoy.
While Special was a classic designation at Buick, these wagons were
truly something special. The bodies were built by the Iona
Manufacturing Co., instead of Fisher, and collectors love showing
off that on the body tag. It proves that the wagons were a distinct
creation from their coupe, sedan, and convertible siblings. These
were the most expensive cars of their series, and so there is a
premium sense of style that this one shows off quite well. The
Dover White and Glacier Green is the correct combo, and it has a
brilliant gloss and depth that's aided by a modern clearcoat
application. And we love how these colors are divided across the
body. The lower section utilizes the side trim to add emphasis to
the stylish dip line in the profile, and the upper boundary draws
added attention to the special wagon roofline. It would not look
this striking if the panels were not so straight and the trim was
not exceptionally bright. This straight, clean, and bright look is
especially appreciated in the front where Buick combined the
boldness of its mirror-like bumper/grille combo with the gentle
curves that run through the hood. Even the wheels are a thoughtful
piece where the classic wire rims adds elegance while also adding
to the brightwork shine, and the whitewalls are bright enough to
coordinate with the paint. Yes, this is an impressive total
package.
The two-tone green interior continues this car's factory-correct
color presentation. The door panels, dash pad, and both rows of
seats have a supple feel that tell you there was the right
investment in keeping this interwoven color package looking and
feeling so inviting. The sea of green is broken up by thoughtful
gray carpeting that feels plush and conceals more dirt. Sit in the
driver's seat, and you are treated to a bright styling masterpiece.
The steering wheel is purely built for elegance with a full chrome
trim ring and Buick crest in the center. Everything from the
speedometer to the heat/defrost controls feel like part of a
vintage layout. Even Buick's SonoMatic AM radio is still on
display. The split tailgate reminds you these were great picnic
machines, and the sale even comes with some classic luggage you can
use as part of your display. Of course there's still plenty of room
back there for you to also carry chairs and supplies to spend all
day at the car show.
Buick's 322 cubic-inch Nailhead V8 is the correct motor for the
Special, and this is even a year-correct block. So since it's
believed to be original to the car, it's great to have such an
authentic total presentation. But being a time capsule doesn't mean
missing out on maintenance. It has been properly respected and had
the right upgrades (including an electric fuel pump.) That's why it
fires up eagerly and runs strong. Buick's Dynaflow automatic
transmission offers a smooth operation, and so this feels terrific
going down the road. You'll love driving this Super everywhere
thanks to power steering, power brakes, and Buick's legendary
supple ride.
Complete with owner's manual, this is the sharp-looking rare wagon
that's built to look great and still love a road trip. So if you
