Sunday, sell on Monday' wasn't just an advertising tagline. It was
a showroom reality. €" Journal of Classic Cars, October 2018 The
Journal of Classic Cars writers continued describing the
mid-Eighties origins and racing history of the Monte Carlo SS Aero
Coupe: ...Chevrolet was among the General Motors divisions
benefiting from a more aerodynamic redesign of its NASCAR-eligible
cars. For the Monte Carlo... the LS trim package included a more
aerodynamic nose, flush-mounted headlamps, new mirrors and even
stiffer rear suspension components. The Aero Coupe was a two-year
offering only for the 1986 and '87 model years, and was successful
in racing. Dale Earnhardt Sr. won the 1986 and 1987 NASCAR
championships driving the Wrangler Jeans (1986) and Goodwrench
(1987) Chevrolet Monte Carlos for Richard Childress Racing.
Hemmings detailed the model's unique points: In addition to the
special sloping rear window and 305/automatic driveline, every
Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupe (RPO Z16) included a rear deck lid
spoiler, F41 sport suspension, 15 x 7-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, a
3.73:1 performance axle, gauge package with tachometer, and a sport
steering wheel. The Aero Coupe models used a unique package shelf
and trunk lid. To maintain access to the trunk, Chevrolet engineers
specified piano-type hinges that did not intrude on trunk space,
and, for 1987, a pair of gas struts to hold it open. Presented here
is a beautifully preserved 1987 Monte Carlo SS in white over
burgundy cloth. Showing just 11,600 miles on its odometer-under 500
miles per-year on average-the car's restrained and respectful use
speaks to its prior owners' pride in stewarding the car. The car's
current, almost showroom-fresh presentation is exemplary.
Collectors can be assured the G is present in the eighth position
in the car's VIN verifying that it was born a true Z16 SS Aero
Coupe. Just 6,052 of these Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupes were built in
1987. The car's exterior white paint-one of only four colors
offered-shines as though it had only just arrived from the factory.
The condition of its red beltline striping and red
model-designation emblems on the front fenders and rear decklid is
equally impressive. The bodywork and bumpers show no parking-lot
damage, and the front lower chin spoiler is likewise free of
abrasion. Cabin glass and all lighting lenses are clear and
undamaged. Factory five-spoke alloy wheels (with Chevrolet-branded
center caps) wear 215-65/15 GoodYear Eagle GT performance tires, a
subtle reminder of the tire brand Earnhart drove into victory lane
so many times. Inside, the vertically pleated burgundy velour
upholstery with burgundy vinyl trim complements the black body
color. The impression of luxury is unmistakable. The front bucket
seats-first offered in the Monte Carlo SS model in 1985-are
separated by a burgundy console housing the t-handle
automatic-transmission shifter, and an ample storage compartment to
the rear. Burgundy is the dominant interior-trim color including
carpeting (protected with GM-branded matching carpet floor mats),
seatbelts, door panels, and the car's dashboard. The dash design
features squared off pods defining the instrument array (tachometer
included) and the HVAC and audio-control c
