Vehicle Description
2003 Ford Lightning
Various media outlets had given the SVT Lightning the 'fastest
pickup' crown ever since the second-generation truck's introduction
in 1999. It became a matter of official record when a stock 2003
Lightning reached 147 miles per hour on a test track. A redesigned
five-spoke alloy wheel, satin-chrome interior door handles and two
brand-new paint colors Sonic Blue Clearcoat (replacing True Blue)
and Dark Shadow Grey (replacing Silver Metallic) were introduced
for 2003. Plus, thanks to some new suspension tuning, Lightning's
payload rating was increased to 1,350 pounds.
Little known, and not often seen, the Ford Lightning from 2003 was
the precursor to the power truck craze of the early 2000's. This
truck for consignment, has had 2 owners and sports 29,234 actual
miles. A few modifications to improve on original looks and
performance and it's all buttoned up for some fast hauling...of
ass!
Exterior
Leading the way for this coke bottle sided, aero clad bathed in
Sonic Blue truck is a new grille sans Ford oval. Now menacing black
horizontal strips are framed by the rear facing scooped hood above,
and the large running light inserted lower bumper with yet another
grille inserted within. Sides are showing well minded gaps and
rockers have extended panels to help with more aero as well as good
looks. The bumped out rear quarters leave a small accommodation for
a "step side" cove in front of the fender. Also, the rear quarters
seamlessly melt into the rear bumper and gate setup which is all
body matching Sonic Blue as well. Covering the gray felted lined
bed and sides in the inside is a like new Gaylord bed cover with
locks and a small rear spoiler. All this curvaceous truck shaped
steel is bathed in a Sonic Blue respray which occurred in 2019.
Also, on the side view mirrors look closely for a ghost-like
airbrushed skull to add some intrigue. 20-inch SVT gray replica
wheels are wrapped in Nitto NT 555G2 new rubber all around. A storm
is brewing on the test track at Classic Auto Mall!
Interior
Clamoring to get to the interior before the storm, we open the
doors with a "flash" and see plenty of light gray molded vinyl
which forms the door panels. A seamless speaker, storage bins in
the bottom, and some panels frame a smaller black molded vinyl
insert with some brushed aluminum panels housing the door locks,
window toggles, and the mirror adjuster. All sleek and nicely
seamless in its design. Seats are power adjustable rounded over
very sporty high back buckets. These are covered in gray suede, and
sport black leather insert panels which are broken up by the gray.
Form and figure are key to these great lookers within the cab. A
center console is between and races forward to the dash. Just as it
meets the dash a trio of aftermarket gauges with white faces and a
black surround and type are monitoring for you. The dash in black
houses white faced gauges too, and in the center are some polished
knobbed temp controls and an aftermarket AM/FM/CD digital sound
system Bluetooth capable as well as a USB port. I hear the thunder
of a V8 in the distance!
Drivetrain
5.4 Liters of SOHC supercharged V8 are shoehorned into the engine
bay. This mill can put out 380hp, and in 2003 broke the truck speed
record going 147mph! It has EFI, and on back a 4R100 4-speed
automatic. The rear axle is a limited slip 3.73 version. Get ready
to "pour" it on. Also, of note, a JLT cold air intake is strapped
on.
Undercarriage
Wonderfully preserved all shiny black framing and floor pans as
well as other structural parts are all rust free. Independent front
suspension with coil overs is on, and in back leaf springs aided by
new Bilstein shocks can be seen, as can a Flowmaster exhaust for
the exhale all looking great and clean. It was a real soaker but
now the sun is coming out....
Drive-Ability
I entered this Lightning now knowing exactly what to expect as this
is my first jaunt into this model of truck. It fired right up with
a thunderous roar, and it was off to the test track. Here it had
neck snapping acceleration, endless power from the supercharger,
and great handling. All functions were working, and the seats were
wonderfully comfy. Gotta luv leather and suede!
A rarely seen Ford Lightning pickup all in great condition with
some slight upgrades, a respray which is miles deep, and enough
curves to make Marilyn Monroe jealous. Sporty fairings all around
and a covered bed I feel a road trip coming on!
