The Chevrolet Camaro Z28 is truly one of the greatest cars ever made. €" HotCars web magazine, June 2020 The Camaro Z28's history is the stuff of automotive legend: The name Z/28 will be forever linked with the Chevrolet Camaro. In reality, it was a simple three-digit, alphanumeric GM sales code for a 'Special Performance Package' that was introduced in December 1966. GM wanted to challenge the Mustang on all fronts and compete with it in the Trans Am series, then recently created by the SCCA. The SCCA had rules, and no GM engine was available that fit into that category. They were either too big, (over 305 cubic inches) or too under powered (6-cylinders) to compete. The beauty of early GM engines was the ability to swap parts to enhance their power, and Chevrolet engineer Vince Piggins did just that. He used a 327 cubic-inch block and installed a crankshaft from a 283 making a stroker engine with a 4-inch cylinder bore that gave the new engine a cubic- inch displacement of 302.4 cubic inches which slid in under the SCCA's mandated maximum of 305 cubic inches. (Source: Mike Duman, Suffolk, Virginia) The first-generation Z28s ('67-'69) saw continued improvements: ... 1968 and 1969 Camaro Z/28s incorporated a larger hood with forced-air induction options, they were available with front disc brakes behind a 15-inch Corvette wheel package and suspension upgrades that included front coil springs and a more rigid rear multi-leaf spring set-up proving that not only could the Z/28 dominate the 'stockers' at the 1/4 mile strip, it was also a leader on the road track circuits. Offered here in white-over-red is a first-generation, 1968 Z28 that wears the then-exclusive-to-the-Z28 twin racing stripes (in black). The car shows a believed-accurate 35,600 miles on the odometer since it rolled off the Norwood, Ohio assembly line. The white body paint is in excellent condition overall; there are no dents or other body damage. So, too, are the chrome bumpers, lower-body trim, door handles, and mirrors. The black stripes are properly located, and their route over the rear-deck spoiler and hood--but not the car's roof--is a Z28 trademark. The single-headlight-per-side front grille is undamaged and complete; lighting lenses and all cabin glass is clear and free of cracks. Original front-fender Z28 emblems, all Camaro script badges, and both front and rear Camaro-logo emblems are in place and properly mounted. Nicely maintained, Corvette-style, original optional 15-inch steel wheels, with chrome trim rings and center covers, are mounted with period-correct GoodYear Wide Tread GT, raised-white-letter tires. The car's red interior is rare on a Z28; it adds flair to this example's appeal, and it has not been modified. The condition of the interior surfaces throughout is excellent, in many instances virtually as-new. Door trim (including roll-up window cranks handles), carpeting, vinyl seat upholstery-all in red) is free of damage or serious-wear indications. The red dashboard is without cracks; the car's original Camaro-branded steering wheel frames the instrument cluster including the 120-mph speedometer. The factory radio and heater controls are in place, as is the Z28-requisite floor-mounted shifter for the 4-speed manual transmission. Under the hood, the Z28-specific, legendary 302 cubic-inch Chevrolet V8 is center-stage in a spacious engine compartment devoid of unnecessa
