This 61 cubic inch (1,000cc) Indian Big Valve model was originally
raced by well-known Dutch rider Mr. Hans Herkulegns, who was famous
for his bicycle pacer work on big BAC and Anzani's Pacer
motorcycles. Originally raced in Europe this Indian was exported to
a collection in Australia and then to a New Zealand collector who
sent it to the United States in 2020. The Indian PowerPlus engine
was a design of Charles Gustafson, who had already earned fame as
an engine designer at the Reading Standard company before he was
approached by the Indian management. His task was to design a
powerful, robust reliable and production friendly engine to replace
the old F-head V-twin design of Oscar Hedstrom. The resulting
61-inch side valve PowerPlus introduced in 1916 was an immediate
success and this model is still one of the most coveted American
vintage motorcycles. This 1923 machine is in period racing trim
with low sports handlebars, Bosch magneto and a rigid rear frame.
It shows as though it has just come off the track under the skilled
hands of champion Dutch rider Hans Herkulegns. www.kuyothbody.com
