For Sale: 1929 Ford Custom in Morgantown, Pennsylvania
Let's face it, woodie (or woody, opinions differ) station wagons
are cool looking. When they're custom made and attached to the
imposing, full-sized bodies of the 1930s and 40s, they're just
about the last word in suburban sophistication. It's hard to
imagine these gleaming concours art statements in supermarket
parking lots, (or down at the beach with a surfboard strapped to
the roof), but they were once everyday transportation.
For consignment, we answer the question of what would happen if you
took a 1929 kit car and made it a woody? Well here is your answer
as we are graced with a 1929 Ford "Phantom " in woody wagon form,
mixing the use of fiberglass, maple and birch, and we have a very
cool hot rod creation.
Exterior
Molded fiberglass panels have been expertly put together on top of
a TCI frame and these are taking the form of the 1929 Phantom,
(Phaeton?). All bathed in Mercedes-Benz Aztec Gold. She has an open
cowl flip to the side hood, chromed front radiator surround with
bar mounted flanking headlights and a dual bar front bumper below.
Running lights are attached to the firewall cowl and running boards
create common ground for the curved fenders which arch gracefully
over deep dish 15-inch chromed steel wheels with a center moon cap
all wrapped in black wall tires. The woody passenger cabin is a
totally handmade maple framed and birch insert paneled passenger
compartment "box" if you will. This is in excellent condition with
no signs of any rotting or finish chip off. This wraps around the
back where we see a lift gate covered in wood with a rear
rectangular glass insert. Taillights are on stalks and a set of
curved dual bar bumpers round the corners protecting the rear
curved fenders. A near perfect canvas top in tan has the roof
covered.
Interior
Seating for 5 comfortably is inside in the form of tan tuck and
roll vinyl bomber style front buckets and a rear curved back bench.
Door panels are wood and have a leather pull on them as well as
power window toggles. Nice short loop tan carpeting covers the
floors and some nifty bamboo floor mats protect the carpeting.
Upfront the dash has been cleaned and painted in the Aztec Gold,
and it has a custom chromed instrument cluster featuring white
faced Dolphin vintage styled round gauges. A snazzy Grant rally
wheel wrapped in wood with a modern take on the banjo style wheels
of yore is fronting the dash with an adjustable column. The
headliner is wood lath with horizontal and vertical oriented laths
to create a solid structure. All warm and inviting in this wood and
tan vinyl interior, very simple but very effective.
Drivetrain
Under the open cowled hood sits a gleaming all metal and polished
consigner stated 427ci V8. This is topped by dual Edelbrock
carburetors and an Edelbrock intake manifold. On the back is a
TH400 3-speed automatic and an 8.8-inch Ford rear axle. A very nice
presentation for the engine.
Undercarriage
A TCI Frame has all the structural aspects covered and the molded
fiberglass takes care of the rest. No rust, just dual Turbo muffler
exhaust, clean body hangers and 4 bar suspension up front. In the
back is a 4 link with coil over suspension. Disc brakes are now
upfront, and drums left for the back.
Drive-Ability
It fired up with a mighty roar and off I went to the test track.
Here it had a tendency to spin the rear tires (I wonder why!). It
ran very smoothly, had a nice smooth cruise, handled well and
stopped very efficiently and bias free for the panic stop test. The
A/C has a condenser installed but nothing else is present for this
A/C system.
A true handle built custom "Woody" box like wagon with a souped-up
engine, new suspension and brakes and a beautifully warm and
inviting interior. Hop in and drive away... in total style!
