Blue is my favorite color. 1969 is my favorite year of manufacture. If you know anything about me, you know how much I love Oldsmobiles. To find a triple blue 69 Cutlass S Convertible made for a joyous day.
This car was sold new in Connecticut. The original documents are with the car. It has always lived in Connecticut. In fact, due to Connecticut not issuing titles for cars over 20 years old, I had to send to WI DMV to get an actual title. The new title will be the first time that the car has ever been documented anywhere but Connecticut.
Some time ago, I would guess 20 years, a previous owner offered this car a nice frame-on restoration. There is a binder containing photos of the body being stripped to bare metal. I don’t see any corrosion issues from the photos and I didn’t during my thorough inspection. The restoration involved a complete new interior, engine rebuild, new exhaust, rear end rebuild, new paint, new weather seals, new wheels and tires and detailing of the trunk.
What impressed me is the trunk. The floor has never been corroded. It was properly refinished with spatter paint and a coat of Clear. A new jack and equipment, as well as a proper spare were installed. They were installed over a new trunk mat. We all know what happens under trunk mats. Any condensation or water that enters due to leakage will make for some nasty surface rust. In this case, there is not one speck of surface rust! That tells me that the weather seals are all doing their jobs and that the climate for storage prevented condensation. Quite remarkable!
The paint is two stage, base coat/clear coat. It shines nicely. There were numerous chips, scratches, rubs and scrapes in the paint. They have been touched up. It seems that this car was driven and enjoyed! It stills looks good from ten feet. The trim and chrome are nice. I believe the bumpers are original. They cleaned and polished up well.
The interior is wonderful. It is evident that the carpet and upholstery were properly replaced. I am not sure about the door panels. They look great, but could be original. The dash is in perfect condition.
The convertible top appears to be original to the car. It is showing its age. We have a new top on order, but the delivery time has be prolonged. Should we not get the new top installed before purchase, the price will be adjusted accordingly. The intention is to sell the car with a brand new convertible top. The convertible boot is nice.
The 350 Rocket V8 was originally fueled by a two barrel carburetor. When it was redone, an Edelbrock intake, 4 barrel carburetor and chrome dress-up kit were installed. New dual 2.5 inch exhaust was also installed. The engine is powerful, responsive and sounds perfect. There is a throaty tone to the exhaust that is pleasant to the ears.
To properly monitor the performance of the engine, a compliment of under-dash gauges were installed. A tachometer was also installed. It resides in the dash, where the clock would have been.
The 12 bolt rear axle was rebuilt. It now contains a set of 3.91:1 gears and Anti-spin limited slip differential. This is a good combination with the engine and the new wheels and tires. The Super Stock II wheels are 15 inch and have Cooper Cobra GT 235/70/15 radials installed. The larger than stock tire works great with the higher gearing. The speedometer has been properly calibrated. The combination yields 2.4 mph per 100 engine rpm. In other words, your speed will be 60 mph at 2500 rpm and 72 mph at 3000 rpm. The 350 Rocket V8 loves the revs. This car is a blast to drive. It is very easy to leave twin black stripes at launch. For a 350 Rocket powered car, it is actually quite quick.
This car is equipped similar to many Cutlasses of 1969. It has power brakes, power steering and AM pushbutton radio. It also has the Convenience Lighting group, which includes lighting in the trunk, glove box and under the hood. There were door edge guards when new, but they were not installed after the repaint. The top is powered.
All features work properly. All lights shine when switched on. There are two sets of keys. There is an Owner’s Manual. The three ring binder contains documents and photos. There is a covered spare and jacking equipment.
The code 51 paint is called Trophy Blue. The blue bench seat upholstery is a nice compliment and the dark blue top sets it all off. Just as it came from the Lansing, MI factory. The triple blue combination really appeals to me. 1969 was a great year for all brands, especially my beloved Oldsmobiles. I like this car and I hope you like it too.
