(ASR) By 1992, the fourth-generation Corvette had been around since
1983 (introduced as a 1984 model). While it had been tweaked
inside, the outside looked much the same as it had over the
previous 10 years. What was new for ?92 was under the hood, a LT1
V-8 packing 300 horsepower and 330 lbs-ft of torque. Now, we have
an almost 30-year-old Corvette with less than 26,000 miles on it
here at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. This model was made in GM?s
Bowling Green, Kentucky factory in December 1991. Dressed in Bright
Red (code 81U), the car?s paint and trim are in overall very good
order, with very minor blemishes visible on the hood and driver?s
left rear corner near the hatch glass. The body is straight and
solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy, the cargo area is tidy,
the battery looks good while the body-colored bumpers fit tightly
to the rest of the body. Even the courtesy lights under the hood
still shine while the hood is opened. This car rolls on period
correct Goodyear Eagle GS-C tires, size 275/40ZR17 at all four
corners. Each tire is mounted on a factory alloy wheel. The wheels
and tires are all in good order. For the 1992 model year, Chevy
upped the ante over the previous L98 engine. The new LT1 engine
packed 300 horses, an increase of 50 horses over the L98. The LT1
featured reverse-flow cooling (the heads were cooled before the
block), and high-compression-ratio pistons, which allowed for a
higher compression ratio of 10.5:1, a new camshaft profile,
free-flowing cylinder heads and computer-controlled ignition
timing. The was a low-restriction exhaust system with a two-piece
convertor. A new distributor was also debuted, called ?Optispark,?
which was driven directly off of the front of the camshaft and
mounted in front of the timing cover, just above the crankshaft and
harmonic balancer. Backing this motor is GM?s 4L60 four-speed
automatic transmission. Driver convenience features include
air-conditioning, cruise control, power rack-and-pinion steering,
power four-wheel disc brakes, power windows, power locks, power
sideview mirrors, power bucket seats and rear window defroster.
Safety and security equipment included dual front air bags and
anti-lock brakes (ABS). Also new for 1992 was Acceleration Slip
Regulation (ASR), a form of traction control that utilized the
Corvette's brakes, spark retard, and throttle close-down to prevent
excessive rear wheel spin and possible loss of control. The
traction control device could be switched off if desired. Inside,
the car has a red leather interior (code 733). The bucket seats are
in overall very good order, as is the matching carpet. The
instrument panel, with its hybrid analog-digital setup, and the
inner door panels are all in very good order. The center console,
shift lever and handbrake (on the driver?s side) are all in similar
condition. A Delco-Bose AM/FM stereo completes the interior.
Competition to this Corvette in 1992 included Acura?s NSX, Aston
Martin?s Virage, BMW?s 850i, Dodge?s Stealth R/T Turbo, Ferrari?s
348TB, Mercedes-Benz?s 500 SL, Mitsubishi?s 3000GT, Nissan?s 300ZX
Turbo, Porsche?s 928 and Toyota?s Supra. Corvette fans, ?90s car
collectors or someone who seeks a quick, rear-drive sports car that
still looks sharp almost 30 years from showroom new, should stop by
MotoeXotica Classic Cars and look this one over for yourself. VIN:
