Vehicle Description
2003 Ford F150 Pickup
The Boss 5.4 may look like an SVT F-150 Lightning or Harley
Davidson Edition, but it is actually not a performance package. In
fact, it's not even a Ford trim option at all. The Boss 5.4 was
produced in limited numbers by L.A West, an Indiana based
conversion company in 2002 and 2003. Only 500 each year were
produced, then these modified trucks were then sold through Ford
dealers who chose to offer them.
For consignment, a truck originally happened upon in a salvage yard
in very rough body condition but mechanically very sound with only
46,489 miles. An ambitious consignor/restorer set out to replicate
and fashion custom parts to emulate the L.A. West Conversion which
had long since gone out of business and the "converting" was
initiated. It is now brought back to life and in fine condition and
runs like a deer.
Exterior
With a much larger front body matching bumper with some aero
venting and cowling, side fairings with a running board, the step
side insert on the bed, this is just the start of something
special! Another body matching bumper on back with neatly surfaced
and molded tail lighting within, we can also see a small spoiler
off the top of the tailgate. Tinted glass is encased in black
trimmings and there is plenty of black accenting throughout to
compliment the Hugger Orange paint which is fantastic. The flat
horizontal surfaces such as the hood take on a cowl induction look
and frame a unique grille and this is painted black and simulated
carbon fiber. On back, to cover the bed aluminum stretchers clamp
to the bedsides and have a black canvas covering stretched and
snapped to the bedsides. Inside, a plastic bed liner is covering
the metal bed and sides. This skate rides on 18-inch wheels which
are cast aluminum and highly polished 5 spoke wheels. These wheels
are wrapped in 265/60R18's on front and back. Now orange you glad
the consignor saved this beauty??!
Interior
A swing of the doors and the hits just keep on coming! Perfectly
molded dark slate gray plastic forms to the contours of the various
armrests, speaker housings and some lower stowage bins. An orange
carbon fiber insert is on as an accent and serves as the housing
for the power windows and locks and side view mirror joystick.
Slipping inside and peering upfront the dash is all orange carbon
fiber fronting which was carefully molded to the instrument
cluster, ac venting and other controls. In the dash center is a
large oval carbon fiber encasement which has more inserted venting,
temp dials, and an AM/FM/CD digital radio. All this is surrounded
by a near perfect black padded dash top and passenger glove box.
Fronting this custom dash is an orange and black steering wheel
with several push button controls inserted. Turning to the seats,
we note black leather buckets with built in headrests, and some
tuck and roll inserts. Orange piping and some embroidered Boss 5.4
stitching finishes off the seats. Noted in the center is a fold
down armrest which when up provides another seat for an additional
passenger. Let's call it a 70/30 split bucket bench. Black
carpeting floods the floors and above is a gray fuzzy broadcloth
headliner with an additional overhead console with some additional
displays, and 2 storage bins. Squeezably soft and interesting!
Drivetrain
Since the Boss 5.4 was strictly an appearance package, our
consigner felt it needed just a bit more oomph to live up to its
name...sooooo. A set of long tube stainless headers and Flowmaster
exhaust was put on to help with the exhaling. For the inhale a
Powerdyne BD11A Supercharger was strapped on to this 5.4 Liter V8
with EFI and a SuperChips performance chip was slipped in. On back
to make this truck move forward, is a 4R70W 4-speed automatic
transmission which throws power rearward to a Dana 60 3.55 limited
slip rear axle. Juicy!
Undercarriage
Slight surface rust is noted on the frame and clean and
structurally sound body hangers support the extra fairings on the
sides. Stamped steel provides the floor pans and an inboard of the
frame fuel tank is seen. Independent coil springs are providing the
ride for the front, and leaf springs bring up the rear. Power disc
brakes are on all 4 corners. Now we will see who's boss?!
Drive-Ability
This truck fired up and off to the test track where it was a fun
driver. Plenty of power from the combo of the supercharger and
chip, a smooth shifter, and nice handling for a pickup. The
interior was very comfy, and all was functioning perfectly during
the test drive.
Brought back from the graveyard for the exterior, but mechanically
always sound, she's fully restored with no rust, custom fabricated
body attachments, sexy wheels and a very kewl interior. Ripe for
the picking right here in our hallowed halls of Classic Auto
Mall.
