Vehicle Description
1950 International Harvester L-110 Pickup
Famous more for its farm equipment than its consumer pickup truck
line, the post war Diamonds, as they became known, were always
behind when it came to design, and offerings through a dealer
network. Not to say they were without the quality, but because of
their focus on the farm equipment market, which they did well at,
the consumer line took a back seat. As a result, there are many
fewer leftovers currently in the classic market, than there are say
from the big 3. Can you say sleeper?
For consignment a 1950 postwar "diamond" L-110 (4200 LB GVW) pickup
truck. This truck is fully restored and painted with a trash
hauling service logo and such, is in great condition and can be
easily changed to "your name here" and utilized as a wonderful
promo for the business.
Exterior
Nary even a hint of rust, the beautifully straightened exterior
steel panels are minding their gaps nicely and bathed in royal
blue. The front grille has been painted and has nice horizontal
trimmings and shiny single headlight bezels. A straight stainless
steel bumper has been put on in front and on back. The V shaped
hood raises from either side and sports a wide white stripe at its
edge just above the hood levers. This runs rearward past the doors
on the cab and wraps around the bottom of the cab roofline where it
meets the bed. Fenders and running boards abound with a spare tire
on the passenger's side of the front of the bedside. A rounded cab
roof sports painted trimmed windows and a rear split window all
rounded off. Utilitarian blackwall tires, black wheels, and shiny
moon caps are all around and even on the spare. A peek at the bed
area and we note a sprayed on black liner with some grip texture in
it to keep things stable in the back.
Interior
Swinging open the dipole designed doors, we can see a large bench
seat in black vinyl stretching between those simple gray panel
adorned doors. The curvaceous original dash is upfront and has a
beautiful patina of surface rust on it along with its original
gauges, a few simple pull levers, an ashtray and a glovebox for the
passenger. Rubber floors keep things bulletproof on the foot area,
and it appears strikingly clean overall inside. I'd have to admit
the unpainted dash front is a nice touch. The bench seat does have
a slight tear in the seat, and in the back as well.
Drivetrain
Under the hood in an unrestored but clean engine bay we note an
inline 6-cylinder Silver Diamond 220ci mill. This is topped with a
1-barrel carburetor with an oil bath air cleaner. On back is the
original 3-speed manual transmission, actuated by a lever on the
tree.
Undercarriage
Underneath we see a pressed steel channel frame with some surface
rust, but very structurally sound. One can even see the original
red paint from the factory overspray underneath some of the
rustproofing that has been previously put on and begun to wear off.
The cab underside as well as the running boards have some surface
rust on them but are also structurally sound. Leaf springs all over
for the suspension, and hydraulic drum brakes are seen on all
corners. Smithy mufflers and a standard exhaust are put on and
looking surface rusted but remaining solid.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, smooth idle, and off to the test track where it
did very nicely. Good smooth acceleration up through the 3 gears
unbind I was rollin'. Easy steering although it's non power
assisted, and braking was good and bias free. I noticed the turn
signals were in op, and the driver's taillight is not working.
Another nice older pickup, straight lines and nice paint. Ready to
put "your name here" and getting people to pick up the phone for
your business, all min style of early 1950's, and simple but
effective workhorse in front of you.
