Rare SS L-78 396-375 hp, 4-speed and 4.10 posi documented with a
build sheet! As it sits the correct motor has been modified, it was
bored and stroked to a 421-425 hp. The original 4.10 rear is still
in the car but the gears were swapped out to more practical 3.55.
Overall very sharp, desirable Chevelle with some muscle, great
colors and features.
EXTERIOR: As you approach the car, you're going to think it's
gorgeous. The black paint is very smooth and glossy. The stripes
are painted correctly. The white stripes against the black and no
vinyl top is stunning. The body fits very well, I didn't see any
rust or damage. It has a cowl induction hood with working flapper
door. If you inspect the car you will find minor imperfections.
Overall the chrome and trim appears to be in excellent shape. The
stainless moldings, bumpers, headlight bezels etc are excellent.
The windshield and weatherstrips are new. Reproduction Polyglass
Goodyear tires are new enough they still have the nubs on the
tread. The SS wheels look to be original but someone did give them
new trim.
INTERIOR: The dash was recently completely replaced. It has a new
set of factory SS gauges with correct 6,500 redline tachometer for
an L-78 and a new working clock. New instrument bezel, vents, dash
pad and heater control panel. It also has an AM-FM stereo that
looks exactly like the original but it's been upgraded internally
and it also has an auxiliary plug. Inside the glove box the light
works and there's an owner's manual. The upholstery has been
replaced. The front and rear door panels still look new, the
armrests, and window cranks have been replaced. Down on the floor
the carpet looks new and has SS floor mats. The Hurst 4-speed has
the correct shifter bezel. Overhead the headliner was replaced and
dome light works.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: The 396 block is dated perfectly to this car.
It has correct casting #s and high perf is also cast on the block.
The block was decked during rebuild so there are no matching vin
#s. It was very recently completely rebuilt with performance
upgrades. It was stroked with a 454 Eagle crank and bored 40 over
making it a 421 stroker motor. It was bored, line honed, decked and
balanced. Every thing internally was replaced- pistons, rods,
bearings, valves, timing set, rockers, bolts etc. The heads were
rebuilt. We have an itemized invoice. It has an Edelbrock intake
painted orange with a new giant dual feed Holley carb and a new HEI
ignition system. A set of Hooker headers is on each side. It runs
cool with a Be Cool aluminum radiator, dual electric fans and
aluminum water pump. The pulleys are billet, the alternator is
chrome. New cadmium plated brake booster and a new master cylinder.
There's also an external vacuum can because of the high performance
camshaft. New steering box and rag joint. Wiper motor and horns are
new.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: I looked up inside the quarters and they've been
replaced at the factory seems with full panels. The inside of the
trunk is spatter painted. The weatherstrip and mat look new.
UNDERSIDE: The bottom of the motor is spotless, the oil pan bolts
and freeze plugs still look new. It has a high torque starter, new
fuel pump and an extra capacity oil pan. The trans is a period
correct M-20 4-speed. It has a rebuilders stamp on it. In back it
has a 4.10 12 bolt posi with code CKK which matches the build
sheet. The fuel tank, straps, sending unit were replaced. It has a
great sounding Flowmaster exhaust with correct cow bell tips. It
has the F-41 suspension which includes swaybars and boxed rear
control arms. The brakes work fine, disc in front. E-brake cables
look new.
Even without the build sheet this is very desirable Chevelle. The
very healthy motor, 4-speed and a posi should be a blast to drive.
The fact it has a build sheet that not only verifies its a real SS
but it also verifies it's an L-78, 4-speed, 4.10 posi car. This
really separates from the others and gives it more investment
potential!
