When Mercedes introduced the W463 chassis Gel�ndewagen in 1990, it
didn't think there would be enough demand to offer a federalized
version for the U.S. market. Europa International was the only
importer, starting in 1993, and it wasn't until 2002 when the
G-Wagen was offered in the U.S. through the Mercedes-Benz dealer
network. Tight supply, exclusive pricing and high demand paired
with excellent build quality and a reputation for durability have
led these to become desirable modern classics.
The G500 retains off-road bona fides such as three locking
differentials from its military forebears, but a more refined
chassis and powerful V8 give it considerably better performance and
road manners (not to mention creature comforts like front and rear
heated seats). Under the hood is the M113 5.0 liter V8 mated to a
five-speed automatic transmission. This truck is clean inside and
out and runs and drives well. Completely stock aside from a modern
