Trucks. Tough and Tightfisted. -Period Chevrolet truck magazine
advertisement The above-quoted magazine ad went onto trumpet the
Chevy pickup's computer-matched brakes (front disc brakes and
finned-drum rear brakes are automatically computer-matched to gross
vehicle weight); tough ladder-type frame (design allows low cab
mounting, easy entry); counter-angled rear shocks (to help reduce
brake and power hop); long vehicle life (95.7% of all Chevy trucks
in the ten most recent model years were still on the job.); and
longer service intervals (30,000 miles between spark plug changes,
7,500 miles between oil changes and chassis lubrication, 30,000
miles between air cleaner elements). The ad summed it all up with
the Chevy truck theme: Built to Stay Tough. The '79 Chevy K10
offered here is compelling proof of truth in advertising: a nicely
refreshed, well-maintained, beautiful two-tone, 42 year-old pickup
that looks nowhere near its age. Mileage on the truck is 96,000, a
very conservative 2,300 miles per year on average. As tough as it
is, this blue-and-white pickup was definitely not over-worked. The
truck's exterior has benefitted from a professional re-spray in a
metallic medium blue with complementing horizontal side panels in
white. Both bumpers are in near-perfect condition, the front having
bumper-protectors installed. Also new is a handsome aftermarket
chrome grille with a chrome extension protecting the leading edge
of the truck's hood. All other factory chrome trim is in place and
in excellent condition. So, too, is factory badging and
identification on the sides of the cab and the truck's rear bumper.
The full-length cargo bed and tailgate are protected with DuraLiner
protective inserts. Factory-style steel wheels (with chrome trim
rings and 4X4-labeled center caps) are mounted with Cooper
Discoverer AT3 raised-white-letter tires. Inside the cab,
light-blue fabric upholstery is complemented by medium-blue vinyl
trim. A center pull-down armrest is in place. Dark-blue door trim
includes roll-up window handles. The handsome standard Chevrolet
steering wheel in black frames a pristine-looking black dash;
gauges retain near-perfect-condition chrome-on-plastic trim rings.
Aftermarket auxiliary gauges are mounted beneath the dash. The
4-speed manual-transmission shifter and separate transfer-case
lever are floor-mounted. Cabin floors are covered with dark-blue,
industrial-style carpeting which is free of excessive wear. The cab
features a sliding rear-window. Under the hood is Chevrolet's
venerable (and reliable) 350 cubic-inch V8. Edelbrock-identified,
finned valve covers and a chrome air-cleaner cover have been added.
The engine bay is clean but has not been overly detailed.
Underneath the truck, frame and suspension components (not
including the exhaust system) have been treated with a
rust-inhibiting coating. There is no evidence of body-panel rust.
