Vehicle Description
The Chevrolet SSR was a fascinating experiment the likes of which
we may never see again. It handles like a Camaro, capable of
hauling real stuff like a pickup, and has a folding hardtop like a
European roadster - all of this wrapped in a V8 drivetrain. Throw
in the low production numbers, and you have the recipe for a future
classic you can enjoy today and watch its status build over the
years.
This 2004 Chevrolet SSR is one of those nicely preserved examples
that has obviously led a very good life in the hands of those who
appreciate a unique machine. Now that fifteen years have passed
since production concluded, we can really begin to appreciate how
the SSR blended the iconic Advance Design pickups of the 40s and
50s with modern fender flares and aggressive stance. In fact, it's
hard not to recognize all the unique lines of this retro machine
thanks to the bold factory Slingshot Yellow. It has a deep luster
that radiates with the kind of care you get on a car with less than
9,500 miles on the odometer. And not only do you get a showroom
level of shine, but also the unique shaped panels continue to fit
with precision. It has a stock style everywhere from the chrome
accents in the grille to the bumper that's notched for the dual
exhaust tips. But keen eyes will spot cool subtle upgrades where
the Chevy bow tie in the alloy wheels and the brake calipers are
both painted red.
With just the touch of a button, the folding hardtop disappears
behind the seats. This reveals the black leather interior, and
let's face it, there's arguably no better combination for a bold
total package than black and yellow. More than just look sporty,
this has all the right performance-oriented features for both the
new and vintage lovers. For example, the dual bucket seats with a
waterfall of color in-between reminds us instantly of the
first-generation Corvette, and the grippy steering wheel has the
right modern fingertip controls. All of this looks terrific today
because this SSR has been treated with respect since day one. You
also have a long list of desirable features. It includes keyless
entry/alarm, power locks, power seats, power steering, and a Bose
AM/FM/CD stereo system. While the covered and locking bed is large
enough to carry really big stuff, it's beautifully finished with
carpet and wood. In fact, it's really just an extremely spacious
trunk. Plus, a modern classic means modern safety features like
dual front airbags, side airbags, and ABS. But the feature we think
you'll like the most is the power windows. Combined with the power
top, it means you never have to leave the driver's seat to go from
coupe-like luxury to a wind-in-you-hair experience. And since this
has cold-blowing air conditioning, you can take the top down all
year long without breaking a sweat.
The key to the SSR's performance is a 5.3-liter fuel-injected V8.
This motor is related to GM's truck line, but it also has some
lightweight performance characteristics, which seems like the
perfect blend for this pickup/roadster. There are plenty of
performance upgrades available for those who want to take it to the
extreme, but with 300 hp already on tap, it would be a bit of a
shame altering a car that's been so carefully maintained all its
life. Turn the key and it starts instantly; the idle is smooth; and
the dual exhaust hums with a V8 tune. The four-speed automatic
transmission w/overdrive is perfect for in-town or on the highway.
Plus, with four-wheel disc brakes and a sports suspension, you'll
never get tired of driving this truck.
Complete with the window sticker, this is arguably the most
collectable late-model Chevy around. It's fast, fun, and unique.
