There is nothing quite like a Jeep CJ! Though the Jeep brand has
changed hands quite a few times since its inception in 1945 as the
world's first mass-produced civilian four-wheel-drive vehicle, the
Jeep is still king of the hill when it comes to utility vehicles.
For nearly 45 years, the CJ (Civilian Jeep) line continued with the
same basic body style, with more than 1.5-million built. Meanwhile,
the CJ-5 model had the longest production run from 1954 to 1983,
with 603,303 produced.
Art & Speed offers you a chance to own a piece of Jeep history with
this magnificently restored and modified 1981 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade.
There is no expense spared on this build, which reportedly spent
most of its life in Arizona before receiving multiple upgrades.
The body and paint are in terrific shape after receiving a repaint
in Cameo Tan and new Renegade graphics. Some distinct upgrades give
this CJ-5 a more robust look from the stock offering. You first
notice the stance with the addition of a Tuff Country 2.5-inch lift
kit featuring heavy-duty shocks and springs. Adding to the look are
the 15-inch aluminum modular wheels wrapped in Hankook Dynapro MT
tires (32x11.50R15LT).
Off-road capabilities are numerous, starting with the
separate-battery-powered 8,000-pound Warn electric winch housed on
the new Pro Comp front bumper. Lighting is crucial on a Jeep, and
this one has it in spades. A Rough Country multi-switch inside
controls everything, including the trick LED projector-beam
headlights with "Renegade" engraved and color-changing accents. A
Rough Country lightbar mounted above the windshield and Rugged
Ridge lights mounted on the bumper give the Jeep extra off-road
lighting capacity.
Modifications continue under the hood, where a 304ci AMC V8 is
paired with a four-speed manual transmission and two-speed transfer
case. An Edelbrock AVS2 carburetor sits on an RPM intake, while a
Performance Distributors HEI distributor lights the fire.
Aftermarket headers and dual exhaust with turbo mufflers help the
healthy 304 breath. Power steering and power brakes (disc front,
drum rear) keep handling under control. While the engine bay is
cramped, it is tidy and neat.
When the weather turns and it's time to get inside, a brand new
black vinyl top and doors from Best Tops keep the occupants dry and
warm. Brand new Corbeau tan leather bucket seats comfortably
welcome you, while Rugged Ridge floor mats keep the carpet clean.
The Vertically Driven Products center console features cupholders
and securely stores valuables. The Grant steering wheel and dash
appear in good condition, with only a couple of scratches on the
glove box. When it's time to party, the Retro Sound stereo belts
out the tunes through four Rockford Fosgate speakers - two in the
rear and two in the Centra-Pod under the dash - and a Kicker
subwoofer in the back.
This 1981 Jeep CJ-5 Renegade has been lovingly restored and
tastefully modified to make a fantastic example of how a Jeep
