Vehicle Description
This 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente lives up to its name with a
red-hot look. And there's even a hot V8 under the hood and an
upgraded five speed. But this hardtop also knows how to help you
keep you cool with the right features - including the A/C
interior.
The Mercury Comet is presented in a bright red with well-fitting
panels to really show off how it has plenty of style. The front end
has crisp fender tops, wide quad headlights, and a bright
wraparound bumper. The rear got an Impala-like triple tail light
arrangement. But our favorite element is the profile. Other
companies would use a trim package to get some full-length
aggressive lines, but Mercury stamped them right into the
sheetmetal with an arrow shape that looks like an arrow pointing
this coupe forward. It accented further by a white streak within
the side's trim. And while the first impression is about showing
off a good-looking classic, there are some custom touches. There's
a ton of custom pinstriping for added style (even on the wheels),
and the large dual exhaust tips hint at the extra power under the
hood.
The sea of red continues inside. The upholstery, dash pad,
carpeting, and headliner all have a good look that makes this
aggressive color also comfortable. They gave this one the right
well-integrated upgrades. For example, the AM radio is still on
display, but the real driving music comes from an AM/FM/XM/CD unit
in the glovebox and upgrade stereo speakers. And classic-style air
conditioning blowing cold with modern R134a refrigerant. You have
the classic Mercury steering wheel and gauges. These are
supplemented by SunPro auxiliary readouts and a floor shifter to
drive home the feeling of a driver's machine.
Ford's mighty 302 cubic-inch motor was still a few years away when
this Comet was first built, but today we know it fits nicely in the
engine bay. It inhales deeper with an Edelbrock four-barrel
carburetor, and it exhales with added power and authority as
headers feed a rumbling dual exhaust. It even has the right
supporting pieces - everything from good hoses to an aluminum
radiator/electric fan. The result is a powerful and strong-running
classic. You get to take full control thanks to the upgrade to a
five-speed manual transmission. And features like front disc brakes
and deep treads on the Uniroyal tires give you added confidence on
the streets.
