Vehicle Description
1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
As for Z28, that moniker stood for "Camaro Special Performance
Package." Product Promotion Engineering specialist Vince Piggins
initiated the Z28 to make Camaro a force in SCCA's Trans-American
Sedan Championship series.
For consignment, a 1971 version of the consignor stated Z28 Camaro.
Our consigner also states it now sports a 350ci V8 crate motor, a
4-barrel carburetor, and a B&M shifter. Now presenting in
yellow and black respray, with a matching yellow and black
interior, this car can float like a butterfly, but stings like a
bee.
Exterior
For this gen 2 car, a single headlight and round signal light sit
next to each other and flank a V shaped grille that juts out beyond
the headlights and has a black egg crate covering. 2 small bumpers
are just below the lights on either side and add a nice highlight
to the front of the car. A hood bump up with black stripes runs
rearward towards the windshield and has hood pins, yellow respray
showing some cracking, chipping and the beginnings of rust peeking
through particularly on the lower end of this car. A spoiler is on
back and continues the black stripe that started upfront. 15-inch
Centerline Auto Drag wheels are wrapped in front by 205/70R15's and
in back by 275/60R15's.
Interior
Not to be outdone by the exterior, two tone yellow and black vinyl
takes over inside. On the doors yellow is sandwiched between a
black molded sill and a lower black molded vinyl armrest/storage
bin. High back buckets with smooth yellow inserts have back
surrounding smooth vinyl bolsters are upfront and in back is a 2
plus 2 two tone rear bench (dual buckets together) setup. All this
floats in black carpeting with Z28 stitched floor mats. In the
center hump is a B&M shifter. The original wrap around dash
covered in wood applique houses the round instruments. To drivers
right is a large aftermarket Autometer tachometer. Some paint
chipping in the black bezels and trim surrounds can be seen on this
dash. An aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette player replaces the original
factory radio and a trio of additional monitoring gauges is seen
hanging below this radio. A tight black vinyl headliner is
above.
Drivetrain
Opening up the hood we see a restored engine bay, nice and black
with clean add ons and hoses all attaching to a 350ci crate engine
not original to this car. There is a 4-barrel carburetor on top,
and it feeds the engine through a Weiand intake manifold. On back
is a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission with a 10-bolt 2.73 gear
GZ stamped axle. Headers and a Flowmaster exhaust evacuate spent
fossils and air and this car sounds awesome!
Undercarriage
Rust free unibody, floor pans, toe kicks and rockers have a nice
black patina covering them. Independent coil sprung suspension is
upfront, and leaf springs are on back with some traction bars.
Power disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the back and
one will notice the mufflers have been rusted through and blown
out.
Drive-Ability
This car fired up with a mighty roar (due to the muffler condition
but it sounds great!). On the test track it has plenty of power
with neck snapping acceleration, decent handling, and bias free
stopping quickly. The traction bars help with rear wheel spin and
fishtailing when you get goosey with your boot.
With a snazzy color scheme, crate engine and 4 barrels feeding this
mill we have a performer in 1971 style. A few faults in the paint
an otherwise clean example ready to take on any Mustangs you can
throw at it.
