For Sale: 1966 GMC Handi-Van in Morgantown, Pennsylvania
For consignment, a seldom seen example of a 1966 GMC Cab Over
Handi-Van. This is a somewhat compact design and has been fully
restored to total rust-free panels, and a finely tuned mid-engine
residing in the "dog house" next to the front seats. Two tone color
gives it some zip, and its simplistic design is very effective
along with this 2-stage paint scheme of silver and green. Scooby
Doo!
Exterior
During the restoration/upgrade process any rusted panels were
removed and replaced with 18 and 20 gauge steel respectively. Then
it was bathed in 2 stage green and silver two tone paint with a
clear coat topping. This simplistic look with a single round
headlight floating above an oval grille below framed by an even
lower bumper, and the GMC badge in the center. A panoramic piece of
glass rises from this metal front and is flat as well. On the sides
for the upper panels which a delineation is made at the
windowsills, a wraparound silver color has been sprayed, and this
works its way around the body of this van. Rockers are nice and
solid, rust free and untrimmed also bathed in green. The
passenger's side offers up a dual door setup for easy side access.
On back dual swinging doors give full access to the cargo area, and
these doors sport tinted glass for extra security. A shiny chrome
bumper frames the bottom, and a single oval vertical taillight is
on either side in the mid back section of the rear quarters. Nice
shiny near perfect deep dish trim rings and dish styled wheel
covers are wrapped in thin whites that are like new, and on all 4
corners.
Interior
A swing of the front doors just above the wheel well in front
yields a green painted metal surround with black vinyl tuck and
roll insert which houses the shiny actuation handles and window
crank. Below is a white panel with a mounted stereo speaker.
Climbing inside we sit on reupholstered high back bucket seats
which have a black broadcloth inserts and smooth black vinyl
bolsters. Between the seats is a black carpeting covered "doghouse"
for the engine. The instrument cluster is original design and is
fairly clean and presents as an oval aluminum ribbed panel with
black faced gauges and white numbers and lettering. A trio of
aftermarket gauges has been added to the center of the dash just
below as well as an aftermarket Kenwood digital AM/FM/CD/Bluetooth
phone capable hookup. The metal dash shows just a bit rough with
some dripping of paint and chipping on the dash top. A rally style
wood steering wheel sits proudly on top of the straight column
which starts from the floor. A 3-speed shifter is on the column.
Black carpeting floods the floors throughout. In back the cargo
area has been completely finished with insulated wood 1/8-inch
paneling in a horizontal laid out wood pattern. This appears as
weathered wood, and contrasts nicely with a white foam/vinyl
headliner. In back stretching across the wheel well bump ups is a
gray broadcloth 6 cushion bed. Shall we shag now, or shall we shag
later??!
Drivetrain
In the mid-section of the van and popping the top of the 'doghouse"
we see a nicely restored yet retaining its patina 250ci inline
6-cylinder which has been completely gone through for any issues
and fixed, such as a rebuilt carburetor. On top is a 1-barrel
carburetor. 3 speeds for the tree shifting manual transmission. The
engine is outfitted with a new distributor and wiring throughout.
On the back is a 3.36 rear axle.
Undercarriage
Underneath some minor surface rust is noted on some of the usual
suspects, but frame, toe kicks, new belly pan, rockers and frame
are all solid and rust free with a few previous invasive rust
repairs on the rockers but now totally remediated. A newer fuel
tank is installed, new Delco kingpins, and rebuilt brakes in the
form of drum brakes on all 4 corners. Leaf springs provide the ride
and a clean exhaust is noted.
Drive-Ability
With new tires just last year, this van rides like a dream, and you
can have one while doing so by using the rear bed setup! Nice
smooth acceleration, good braking, and smooth shifting. A
pleasurable experience.
Seldom seen a Handi-Van cab over mid-engine, fixed up interior
complete with sleeping accommodations and wonderful high back
buckets. Good paint, and a two-tone mixture all add up to a nice
surprise in this GMC Cab Over van.
