For Sale: 1922 Humber Motorcycle in Saint Louis, Missouri
Humber hails from the heart of the British motor industry in
Coventry. This pioneering firm produced bicycles before expanding
to a De Dion-engined three-wheeler, then motorbikes, and expanding
later into airplanes and Humber automobiles. By 1913, Humber was
the second largest manufacturer of cars in the UK, with a
reputation for quality products. In 1896, Thomas Humber produced
England's first practical motorcycle. By 1911, a 340-cc Humber
V-twin won the Isle of Man Junior TT. Their later machines, as seen
here, featured horizontally opposed, longitudinally mounted
side-valve twins in a variety of displacements. This water-cooled
600-cc, 4.5-hp "flat twin" bike features a three-speed gearbox and
belt drive. It was a highly regarded, if expensive, bike in its
day, and owners were rewarded with a machine of "reliability and
grace" as well as a top speed of 70-mph. Previously part of a
significant collection of classic motorcycles, this well-preserved
and highly original Humber is a fabulous collector piece, and is
believed to be one of approximately three in existence. Please note
this motorcycle has received a cursory mechanical check, and while
the engine is free, it has not been started during its time in the
Kleptz collection. It is offered as-is, requiring additional
sorting, and is sold on a bill of sale only. For additional details
