Vehicle Description
When Jaguar unveiled the XK120 to the world in 1949, they raised
the bar for exotic engineering, high performance, and style at a
surprisingly reasonable price point. The XK120's follow-up, the
XK140, was announced in 1954 as a 1955 model, and it introduced
numerous improvements meant to address the shortcomings of the
XK120. With the 140, Jaguar fitted superb rack and pinion steering,
improved braking ability, telescopic dampers, and increased
suspension travel. The twin-cam XK engine received a bump in power
and was moved forward in the chassis, allowing for improved legroom
and passenger comfort. Finally, the styling got a subtle freshening
with full-width bumpers, a slightly wider grille, and additional
chrome trim. The XK140 was a superb driver's car that succeeded in
elevating the XK formula to a new level, with superior refinement
and the gutsy performance that Jaguar enthusiasts know and love
today. This XK140 is a long-term Terre Haute, Indiana car that
belonged to one of David's favorite high school teachers for many
years, and he acquired from them. It is a good restoration project,
with primarily solid sheetmetal and a good undercarriage. The
exterior trim is also complete and in good order all around,
allowing for a straightforward refurbishment. The interior is
mostly complete, though with incorrect seat covers and considerable
wear. The bones are there for restoration, including the correct
original steering wheel, Smiths instruments, and chrome interior
fittings and the wood is intact, though in need of total
restoration. The top frame is also intact and functional, though
the canvas is bad. Looking at the underside, it appears quite solid
and complete. There is a newer stainless steel exhaust system, and
while the gearbox and rear axle are intact, their internal
condition is not known. The twin-cam XK engine is period-correct
from a MkI Saloon, and it has not been run or tested as the
carburetors are frozen and fuel system corroded. A spare engine,
cylinder head and gearbox assembly from an XK140 are included in
the sale. Being virtually complete and quite solid, this XK140
Drophead is being offered as-is, and will be an excellent candidate
for a full restoration and the ideal "blank canvas" for its next
owner to build their vision of the ideal XK140. Offers welcome and
