powerful Camaro ever brandishes more than just a big engine. €"Car
and Driver, January 2012 Definitely not the product of simply
tossing a big engine under the hood, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 was widely
hailed for its combination (and integration) of power and handling.
As Car and Driver noted: Power: Top speed is a claimed 180 mph.....
With 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet of torque from the
supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V-8, eye-popping acceleration is also a
given despite the ZL1's hefty 4120-pound curb weight. Handling: The
ZL1 does exactly what you want all the time, with no surprises.
Front grip is tenacious enough that you actually get a sense of the
tires biting in as you turn the wheel. Power comes in so creamily
and with such linearity that it's easy to forget you're driving a
580-hp car. The brake pedal feels solid but still offers enough
travel for smooth application, and it shows no fade. The ZL1 goes
around the track with a composure that would shock many BMW M3
fans. This is the meanest, most capable Camaro Chevrolet ever
manufactured. The ZL1 offered here is effectively a brand-new
automobile. Driven just 1,533 miles over nine years-fewer than 175
miles per-year on average-it's no surprise that virtually every
surface and component on the car is in factory-fresh condition. The
exterior high-gloss black paint with lower flat-black trim, front
splitter type spoiler, 20-inch black split-spoke wheels (wearing
Goodyear F1 performance tires), carbon-fiber hood insert, and angel
eyes headlights combine to give off an unmistakable, mildly
sinister don't mess with me vibe. Devoid of striping or other
graphic tricks, discreet ZL1 badging cues the onlooker that this is
no ordinary Camaro. Out back, the quad trumpet exhaust pipes make
their own unmistakable statement. (Be sure to watch the short
startup and walk-around video at the GarageKeptMotors site for a
tasty sample of the sound 580 horses make.) Inside, the ZL1
treatments are similarly subtle, but well integrated and effective.
Embroidered ZL1 logos on the headrests, ZL1 badging on the entry
step-over areas, alcantara inserts and deviated red stitching on
the front sport bucket seats (and the rear seats as well), and the
console-mounted automatic shifter with its red deviated stitching
on the boot combine for a visual performance statement. The
driver-focused dash and console instrument cluster feature a
classic design that harkens back to the early Camaros; the
alcantara trim and ZL1 dashboard emblem communicate state of the
art. Every feature in the car functions as it should, and every
control surface is free of wear or damage. Open the hood, and the
6.2-liter, supercharged V8 with its bright red top cover amid all
the black components draws the eye. There is no mistaking its
amazing power potential. Underneath the car, the factory-installed
engine and transmission covers are in place and undamaged. Every
other surface is showroom fresh. The practically new condition of
this Camaro ZL1 is faithfully presented from every angle (including
from below) in the more than 145 high-definition photographs and
the short walk-around-and-startup video available at the
GarageKeptMotors site. That said, we always encourage in-person,
