Rare and desirable L-78 396-375 hp which is the most potent motor
listed available in 1969. This one has a vin # matched motor,
correct trans, rear, colors etc. Restored very nicely.
The time line of the build checks out:
The block was cast Aug 18
Engine was assembled Feb 18th
Trans was built Jan 15th
Rear end was built Jan 22nd
Car was finished February 4th week
EXTERIOR: Paint code 50-50 = Dover white upper and lower without a
vinyl top. Body and paint is actually quite impressive. It is
absolutely smooth everywhere. I felt all along the bottoms there's
not a bubble. The body panels fit square and flush. Down the sides
and over the tops are straight. The panels are square and flush.
The paint is like white glass, very smooth and glossy. The blue SS
stripe down each side gives it some pop. It looks like all of the
trim is new. Upfront the emblems, bumper, grill and bezels are new.
The chrome grills on the hood, mirrors, door handles look new. The
stainless steel trim around the windows and gutters were replaced.
In back the taillights, bumper and emblems also look new. It has an
original rear mount antenna. The glass is all real clear and fits
real nicely, the windshield is new. Door jambs are painted smooth
and slick. The weather strips, window seals and sill plates were
replaced. Correct 14 inch SS wheels have been repainted and given
new center caps and trim rings. The BF Goodrich tires look like
they have hardly any miles.
INTERIOR: Redone in it's original blue color. Down on the floor the
carpet looks new, the center console is new with a Hurst 4-speed
shifter sticking out of it. The seats were reupholstered, have new
head rests and chrome trim. In front of me the dash pad, deluxe
wheel, instrument panel, vents look new. It has a factory gauge
cluster with a 6,500 redline tachometer which is correct for a 375
hp motor. There is a new digital retro stereo. Door panels and
armrests are new.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: This legendary 396-375 hp engine is #s
matching. The stamped JD code and dates on the front of the block
looks original with broach marks. The matching vin is down on the
side of the block on the rough cast part of the motor which is very
hard to tamper with. The hump on the heads indicate rectangle ports
which matches up to the factory aluminium intake. It has a correct
replacement Holley 750 cfm carb. Because it's a high revving, solid
lifter motor they give these deep groove pulleys so the belt don't
fly off. It has stock exhaust manifolds, chrome valve covers and
air cleaner. The brake booster is cadmium plated, has a Delco
battery topper with the spring clamp cables. The bottom of the hood
is painted gloss white with hood insulation. The squirters are
hooked up. Overall a clean, tidy motor compartment.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: It is solid, has some repairs and painted a nice
grey and white spatter finish paint. The trunk mat, decals and
weather strip are new. The bottom of the trunk lid and jamb are
smooth and glossy.
UNDERSIDE: The front end is not brand new but it does look like
it's been pretty thoroughly going through. Shocks do look recent.
Looking up at the motor it is very fresh, fuel pump and starter
look recent. The bell housing and transmission are clean, the shift
linkage looks new. It is an original Muncie M-21 4-speed. The rear
end is also an original 12 bolt 3.73 posi. Recent exhaust system
with a crossover pipe and the cowbell chrome tips. The fuel system
looks new including the tank, sending unit and straps. It has disc
brakes in front, the emergency brake cables are hooked up. The
floors are solid metal.
Very recently a couple L-78s have sold at auction for about double
what we are asking. Not only is this an exciting muscle car to own
but also has investment potential.

a walk around video that explains the car's condition in
detail.
