Vehicle Description
1962 Cadillac Sedan DeVille
Here is nostalgia, the only thing missing is "Ward & June Cleaver".
This was from that era, that illustrious era that spoiled America
rotten with cars a city-block long and half a city-block wide. We
were "Fantasy Island" where one's wildest dreams came true...a
dollar was worth ALL of its pennies....and Cadillac was a motorcar
of distinction.
This 1962 Cadillac is totally American such as: baseball, hot dogs,
apple pie, and Sedan deVille. This goes back to a time when an
automobile was purchased for its looks and performance and not how
many miles to the gallon nor 0-60 in a nanosecond. America wasn't
into the crotch-rockets of today back then, America was the
purveyor of the luxury car...Cadillac was the leader,
remember...."The Standard of the World", and this consignment fits
the slogan to a T! This car was stored in a garage for 30 years and
the consigner brought it back to life. A long list of upgrades,
redos and new parts that have been refreshed is available upon
request.
Exterior
Nevada Silver Metallic covers steel which is minding its gaps
fairly well considering there are a lot of seams on this large 4
door vehicle. Paint has some scratches and a few dents and dings
from the passage of time and use. The lower areas of the car are
showing some usage of body filler, rust bubbles, and slightly
uneven panels, and some invasive rust around the passenger wheel
wells. The front bumper has also been filled and molded to
remediate rust that has formed on its corners. This still remains
one of my favorite Caddies with its long sleek lines, hint of rear
tail fins and the jet age rear bumper, emulating dual thrusters.
Fender skirts and plenty of stainless trimmings in window surrounds
and body highlighter moldings can also be seen. Standard Cadillac
wheel covers of the era are on new (2020) black wall tires.
Interior
A swing of all 4 doors reveals a mixture of many surface treatments
befitting of a car that is the gold standard of success, and this
car does not let us down. Stitched silver leather, pattern
broadcloth, brushed aluminum panels are peppered with power toggles
and levers. Slipping behind the wheel we come to a rest on a front
bench which may be as large as the couch in my living room. This is
covered with white leather stitched and buttoned and has some
accenting silver leather bolsters at the sides and backs. Some wear
in the form of cracking is showing on the driver's seat
particularly on the bolsters. The original dash which fronts this
bench is looking nice and clean and has plenty of knobs and buttons
to play with while driving. This dash is also a mixture of metal,
aluminum, and molded plastic chromed bezels and remains in nice
condition. On the top of the dash is a high beam sentinel for auto
dimming, because pressing that button at your feet is so
pedestrian! Cruise control and A/C are also added options to this
well optioned car. In back is another large bench with a center
fold down armrest and above is a nice tight headliner. Nice clean
gray carping is installed and is flooding the floors in thick pile
style. A shout to the trunk which is all original and unrestored
but looking in fair condition with the spare and lots of room.
Drivetrain
A lift of the hood and we see an unrestored engine bay with some
patina and slight corrosion on some bolt ons. We note a 390ci V8
topped with a 4-barrel carb atop. On the back is a 4-speed
Hydramatic transmission, and way back is the 3.21 rear axle which
was a must and standard on cars with A/C.
Undercarriage
A new fuel tank, sending unit and all hoses have been attended to
and these all are mounted to an undercarriage of heavily surface
rusted steel. The X frame and floor pans are structurally sound
with just slight wear off of the undercoating on the floorboards.
Independent coil springs for the front and a 4 link with coil
springs for the back suspension provide the cushy ride for this
land yacht. Power drums are seen on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
She fired up with a large puff of blue smoke so I suspect there is
some oil being burnt within the engine. There is also a miss, and
the valve train was noisier than normal. It did provide a smooth
ride and I also noticed the main window switches on the drivers
door only work when door is closed. Windows do roll up and down at
their respective doors though. Also the wipers can be turned on
with the aid of a switch in the glovebox.
A wonderfully designed piece of early 60's success in this car
which definitely has the "look". She's a bit rough on the engine
end but as with any classic will need some attention to get it back
to snuff. Meanwhile the basics are all there and you are surrounded
by luxury and conveniences. you don't even have to dim the high
beams with your foot!
