First shown in 1974 with production commencing in 1975, the
911-based 930 Turbo was an instant legend and as homologated by the
FIA, it served as the foundation for much of Porsches international
racing successes to follow during the next several decades. Imports
to the United States began in 1976, but stiff emissions mandates
forced Porsche to withdraw the 930 Turbo here from 1980 through
1985. Porsche brought the car now re-designated 911 Turbo back to
America for 1986 and its triumphant return was the subject of
countless articles and road tests. Addition of a catalytic
converter with an oxygen sensor helped the 911 Turbo meet emissions
standards and U.S.-spec power output rose to 282 horsepower. New
16X8 and 16X9 wheels and VR speed-rated tires provided added grip
and a 4-speed manual rear transaxle delivered the power.A select
few buyers opted for the M505 Slant Nose Body Option, based on the
front bodywork of Porsches victorious 935 racing cars. Available
since 1981 via Porsches Sonderwnche Special Wishes program, the
M505 factory option cost approximately $29,000 new and
