Vehicle Description
1979 Dodge Magnum
Seeing production only for 1978-79 years, the Dodge Magnum was
designed to retain driver Richard Petty for Chrysler in the NASCAR
series. With its sloping clear covered headlights and grille, an
homage to the 1936-37 Cord, it was better than the current Cordoba,
which proved to be lackluster in its aerodynamics. Sadly, Richard
Petty jumped ship and drove the Monte Carlo, but interestingly his
son Kyle, won his first race driving a Magnum.
This Magnum, for consignment, is taking on the look of the earlier
Mopars like the Challenger, Charger, and Super Bee, was marketed to
people who had grown up with the latter and raced them on the
streets but now had families and wanted the look of their former
cars, without the brute force. A 3-owner car which has meticulous
records due to a Chrysler service tech owning the car originally,
then continuing the service with the second owner.
Exterior
Sunfire Sable Metallic covers this car and appears in fair
condition. All brightwork is correct, as well as clear plastic
covers on the sloping headlights and grille. Passenger headlight
shows some moisture invasion. Standard Magnum XE wheels (Mopar
Rallye style), and a Light Camel Landau top is present. Lines and
gaps are standard for this era car, and dents and dings are very
minimal.
Interior
A plush buttoned tufted leather covers the 2 buckets in front and
bench in the rear. Belting is seen as an accent to the seating. A
flip down armrest on the center console is between the buckets and
ends at the front of the buckets. Power driver's seat, and
mechanical toggles for side mirrors are seen on the driver's door
and dash. In typical late 80's styling a squared off dash houses
round analog instrumentation. An original steering wheel fronts the
dash. No cracking or faults are present on the upper dash which is
padded vinyl. The headliner is cloth and in good condition.
Drivetrain
A 318 ci V8 Lean Burn mill is seen when flipping long hood. This is
connected to an A904 Torqueflite transmission. Technology was
advanced for the time with an onboard spark control computer from
inception, electronic ignition, and a lockup torque converter are
on this car. The Magnum was well-featured with power steering,
brakes and seats, and the suspension includes Chrysler's standard
adjustable, longitudinal torsion bars, lower trailing links, and
front and rear anti-sway bars.
Undercarriage
A little bit of surface rust, but mostly black undercoating making
the underside rust free. Solid floor pans and rockers are noted in
this mostly barren and solid underside. Power disc brakes are on
front and power drums are reserved for the rear.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and good runner, it's a somewhat of a muscle car
for the family man. In production for a mere 2 years, it's a little
rare and this version comes up in very nice condition. It runs well
and stops quickly. All functions were working save for the A/C not
blowing cold.
A nice survivor, well maintained by the original mechanic owner
throughout its life, with recorded services. Consigner stated
75,854 miles, your opportunity to own a unique piece of Chrysler
history only produced 2 years.
