Toyotas go, this one is a beautiful survivor and is now free of its
Wisconsin time capsule and it reportedly has less than 18,000
actual miles! Sold new at Modern Motors in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin
on 04/08/1980 and traded in with a 1978 Ford Courier 2WD Pickup
truck. The original Fond Du Lac family owned the truck for decades
and sold it in 2012. Recently this fantastic example was on display
in the showroom at Toyota of Lakewood in Bradenton, Florida. It is
still included with the original new Toyota purchase contract,
original Toyota title application, original dealer tax receipt,
original Wisconsin registration and original owner?s manual. Made
in February 1980 in Japan, the truck left the assembly line with
the following options ? all weather package, power steering, window
package, tailgate panel, tilt steering column and ultra mirrors.
This example was originally purchased at Modern Motors in Fond du
Lac, Wisconsin on April 8, 1980 and received the following dealer
installed options - rustproof, undercoat, chrome step bumper, floor
mats and driver and passenger lumbar supports. The sunroof and the
roll bar date to 1981 and there?s a spare tire and wheel mounted in
the cargo bed. This Toyota short bed 4x4 is all original, save for
the bench seat and the exhaust, which are the only things new. The
truck has its overall original Medium Blue paint (code 857),
decals, spark plugs, spark plug wires, hoses, drive belts,
distributor cap, rotor and rubber cover. The truck?s paint is in
surprisingly great original condition overall, as its stripe
package. Its bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is
extremely tidy, the cargo bed is in very good order, the black,
front bumper and chrome corrugated rear step bumpers look
excellent. The period correct BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires,
size 31x10.50R15LT at every corner. Each tire is mounted to an
alloy wheel, with locking hubs up front. Note that these tires date
back to 1986; we do not recommend driving high speed on them after
the sale. Under the hood is the original 2.2L SOHC four-cylinder
engine (code 20R). The 20R and subsequent models featured important
design changes relative to the earlier SOHC R-series engines. The
head was changed from a reverse-flow to a crossflow type with
hemispherical combustion chambers and shorter valve rockers. The
timing chain was strengthened. The lower block bearings were
strengthened against wear, safeguarding oil pressure, and the
stroke was lengthened. The changes increased torque substantially
and shifted peak power and torque towards the lower speed range.
The later R series engines did much to establish Toyota's
reputation for reliability, which had previously been indifferent
at best. Backing up the motor is a four-speed manual transmission
with 4.375:1 differential in two-wheel drive. In four-wheel drive,
both differentials have the same 4.375:1 ratio. There?s a two-speed
transfer case with low and high ranges. Driver conveniences
features include power steering, power brakes and tilt steering
column. Inside, there?s a new blue bench seat with a cutout for the
floor-mounted shifter. There are also bladder pumps to control the
seat?s lumbar support for driver and passenger: a luxury touch. A
blue carpet complements the seat and the rest of the interior,
including the matching headliner. A three-spoke steering wheel with
a stitched vinyl cover is excellent. The inner door panels are in a
similar state. The instrument panel features full instrumentation
(for 1980) and idiot lights plus two additional gauges mounted
beneath the dash. A factory AM/FM stereo and floor shifter, along
the transfer case lever, complete the crisp and overall original
interior. Competition to this Toyota in 1980 included 4x4 versions
of Chevrolet?s LUV, Datsun?s 720, Dodge?s Ram 50, Ford?s Courier,
Mazda?s B2000 and Mitsubishi?s Mighty Max. These early Toyota
trucks are becoming rare commodities, especially with such
reportedly low mileage. This is a must-see for Toyota and pickup
