I don’t think there’s another car quite like the DeTomaso Pantera. The combination of sleek Italian looks and raw Ford power creates an exotic car that you can really enjoy, without worrying about outlandish timing belt changes or $2,000 water pumps. It was definitely ahead of its time as well. After all, how many cars in the early 70’s were mid-engined 5-speeds with 4-wheel disc brakes?
This four-owner Pantera is a desirable pre-L car and is in wonderful condition with only 34k miles. It has never been “restored” but rather has been well maintained over the years. It is free of any rust problems which is a paramount concern when buying a Pantera, and has a sharp, straight body that has never been wrecked. Original a yellow car, it has been repainted to the present red with black rockers. The paint is in very nice condition as are all bumpers, moldings, and exhaust. The Campagnolo magnesium wheels have been painted and cleared for a brighter look that is also easier to keep clean.
This Pantera has its original numbers-matching 351 Cleveland engine. It was completely rebuilt in 2009 with a lot of nice internals. The 4V closed chamber heads were completely rebuilt with new roller rockers, valves, and valve springs to match the new roller camshaft. Other performance enhancements include an aluminum intake manifold, Demon carburetor, and MSD ignition. There are also high volume oil and water pumps for improved reliability.
The 5-speed ZF transmission was professionally rebuilt by Pantera Performance in 2015. While the transmission was out, a balanced aluminum flywheel and McLeod RST twin disc clutch were installed along with new master and slave cylinders. The drivetrain is now better than new; it makes great power with improved reliability but without any over-the-top modifications. There are also plenty of other typical Pantera maintenance items that have been performed over the years (cooling upgrades, brass steering rack bushing, upgraded window motors, battery box, etc.).
The interior looks mostly OEM, including the steering wheel. The dash, seat covers, center console, and door panels all remain stock and are in very good condition. The headliner was recently replaced along with the carpeting. Note the front storage compartment and rear fiberglass tub were also re-carpeted. All gauges work properly, as do the horn, wipers, radio, heater, and air conditioning. The space saver spare and original owner’s manual are also present.
This is really a nice find. Aside from being a beautiful car in outstanding condition, it has limited miles and ownership, is mostly stock with a nice blend of upgrades, and has excellent mechanicals. Further, Panteras have proven to be a good investment in recent years. Let this car show you what the Pantera experience is all about.
