For Sale: 1999 Shelby Series 1 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

The 1999 Shelby Series 1 is important for a very good reason. It's the only car that was designed and engineered by Carroll Shelby from a clean sheet of paper, then built by his company from the ground up. Other Shelby cars were collaborations with other carmakers. This one is all original, having been driven only 2709 miles. For power, it features the L47 is a double-overhead-cam, four-valve-per-cylinder engine developed by Oldsmobile engineers. It became the Aurora engine and the design layout was also used for the award-winning Cadillac Northstar V8. It also competed in various forms in sports car and Indycar racing. In the Series 1, the engine's position is well behind the front axle for better balance. A ZF manual 6-speed transaxle was the solution to move the transmission out of the passenger compartment as well as positioning more of the drivetrain's mass to the rear of the car, giving the Series 1 a nearly ideal 49/51 percent front-to-rear weight distribution. The frame itself is fabricated from 6061 extruded aluminum. Of course, more beautiful aluminum comes in the form of the 3-piece Shelby wheels. They are staggered 18-inch diameter masterpieces, with a 10-inch width for the front and an ultra-wide 12-inches in the rear. Goodyear built special F1 Supercar tires for the project, and this car has them. The fronts are 265/40ZR18 giants, and the rears are 315/40ZR18 goliaths. The suspension is a unique "Shelby Dynamic" coilover setup. With all this one-off uniqueness, it's still a comfortable car, with air conditioning, power steering, four-wheel power disc brakes, power windows, power locks and mirrors, and a GM sourced premium audio system. Carroll Shelby had a long and storied career, highlighted by associations with many powerful and influential automotive personalities and companies, including all three of the major American manufacturers. Few have been involved in the design, construction, testing, and driving of so many renowned and beloved cars, from the Shelby Cobra to the Dodge Viper; the GT500 to the Ford GT40. From this fertile engineering and marketing mind emerges the Series 1. There are bits of the DNA of many of his legendary projects present in this automotive melting pot. Some even say the rear view is reminiscent of a Ferrari. In many ways different, in many ways familiar, the Shelby Series 1 is a significant part of the unmatched Shelby legacy. ********** DISCLAIMER MAXmotive specializes in collectible classic and custom vehicles.
