€"Hemmings, February 2010 At the very end of the muscle-car
heydays, with crash-testing and an energy crisis applying a double
whammy, the 1973 Mustang still offered a satisfying measure of that
fast-fading performance muscle. One of the two 351 Cleveland V8
4-barrel engine choices, the H-code, was still rated at 266
horsepower, despite a switch to the H-code's smaller valves. The
'73 Mustang fastback offered here is an H-code car. This is a
survivor Mustang Mach 1 still wearing its factory Gold Glow (code
6F) paint over a black-and-silver vinyl interior. The car's
exterior features the twin-air-scoop, blackout hood, larger-for-'73
front urethane bumpers, Mach 1 badging on the front fenders and
rear deck, black hockey stick side stripes, black trunk-mounted
spoiler, and five-spoke styled steel wheels with Mustang-logo
center-caps (mounted with Mastercraft Avenger performance tires).
The factory paint is in excellent condition overall, and body-panel
fit and alignment is proper. No body rust is evident. The car's
interior features black vinyl upholstery trimmed in silver with
complementing cloth inserts on the rear jump seats. The condition
of interior surfaces overall is excellent. The driver's seat shows
some wear, but no sign of abuse. All the upholstery-including on
seatbacks-is free of rips or tears. Black cabin carpeting is well
maintained and protected by Mach 1-branded carpet mats in front. A
wood-rim, Mustang-logo steering wheel frames the large speedometer
and tachometer, and a smaller fuel gauge. The upper center console
adds auxiliary gauges for oil pressure, voltage, and engine
temperature. The factory AM-FM push-button radio is present in its
proper location. Slide-lever-operated air conditioning and heating
controls and a t-shifter for the C4 automatic transmission, and an
armrest with storage (concealing the updated Pioneer audio head
unit) complete the console. Door trim includes an attractive
combination of wood-grain panels, black vinyl, and black carpeting,
all in excellent condition. Under the hood, the 351 Cleveland
4-barrel V8 (in proper Ford blue) draws air through the hood scoops
directly into the air cleaner. The engine bay is very clean, but
has not been over-detailed. All components are properly located.
Underneath the car, the massive snake-look exhaust headers and full
dual-exhaust system with cross-over pipe show no signs of overly
aggressive driving styles or track use. Only minimal surface rust
is present on some metal surfaces. The well-preserved, survivor
condition of this '73 Mustang Mach 1 fastback is faithfully
presented from every angle (including from below) in the more than
135 high-definition photographs and the short
walk-around-and-startup video available at the GarageKeptMotors
site. That said, we encourage in-person, up-close inspections by
