Way back in 1964, Pontiac created a car that set the stage with a factory hot rod many consider to be the first American muscle car, the GTO. Gran Turismo Omologato (GTO), a name borrowed from Ferrari denoting its car was race-ready for the grand touring class, is the name that legendary Pontiac performance engineer John Delorean chose for the street-performing muscle car released in the mid-sized Pontiac LeMans trim. The GTO came to be about when GM banned factory-sponsored racing in early 1963 and Pontiac’s managers began to emphasize street performance. Delorean’s concept was to stuff the lightweight body with the biggest engine available in the full-sized Pontiacs.
This 1965 Pontiac GTO 2-door Sedan is finished in Montero Red with Black Leather Interior. It has only 74,409 miles and has been very well cared for with only a minor rust spot in the trunk. Choice upgrades include American Racing wheels and an Edelbrock carburetor. The first generation Pontiac GTO lasted only until 1967 and will continue in today’s age to be a valued collectible.
