Vehicle Description
1980 Porsche 928 Coupe
Last year, as the second-generation Porsche Panamera began arriving
in dealer showrooms, its spiritual predecessor, the Porsche 928,
celebrated its 40th anniversary. The 928 is a unique car that was
in many ways significantly ahead of its time. Even today, it
invokes many oohs and aahs when one rolls through town. And for
many, it served as a poster child for many people's dream car,
particularly for those who grew up in the 1980s.
One can ooooh and ahhhh with this model as well as it has all the
right stuff that was put into one of these front engine
Porsches...automatic transmission and a water cooled V8 that pumps
out 220hp. With a mere 22,850 original miles it is here for the
enthusiast that needs a bit roomier car than a Carrera can offer,
as well as the front engine aspect, call now!
Exterior
From its smooth rolling headlight nose to the iconic rounded rear,
this car is draped in a classic German silver repaint. With no
previous damage, it was repainted to combat the fade of the
original paint and take care of some previous scratches, now
presents beautifully. This sporty "hatchback" if you will, still
has great curb appeal and 1980s lines. An integrated matching
silver plastic yet absorbent front bumper and two black rubber
crash bumpers on back, it had to conform with US standards. A
sunroof is within the top and has a new motor and switch, so it
works perfectly. Standard Porsche wheels are on all four corners
with new rubber.
Interior
Sporty black buckets grab you upon entering the early '80's space
age cockpit. These have wide truck and roll tufted panels for
inserts, and nice smooth bolsters covered in black. A 2 plus 2 rear
seating arrangement crams in behind the buckets having their own
center console and armrest and leave a long empty storage area
under the greenhouse glass of the hatchback. Power windows, and
power locks are installed, as well as an aftermarket Sony
Stereo/CD/MP3 player. A modular stylish instrument panel/dash is
fronted by the 928 logo emblazoned steering wheel in front of the
driver. Headliner appears in very nice condition, and on the floors
black carpeting covers with no spots or fading.
Drivetrain
Topping out at 140mph this water cooled 4.5 Liter V8 coupled to a
Daimler Benz automatic 3-speed transmission makes driving it a
breeze...albeit a stiff breeze as this car will do 0-60 in 8.5
seconds. All thanks to the Bosch L Jetronic EFI feeding the 4.5
L's. Engine bay condition is unrestored but nicely preserved and
detailed.
Undercarriage
Floorpans and rockers are covered over for aero efficiency. The
Porsche 928 was one of the earliest production cars to utilize
aluminum throughout its construction. Along with the weight
reduction, aluminum also means the Porsche 928 is resistant to
rust. Additionally, rust-resistant galvanized steel was employed
for the floor pans, roof, and rear quarter panels.
Drive-Ability
This 928 fired right up and idled smoothly. After a brief warmup,
the test track was just laughed at by this car. It has nice snappy
acceleration, great handling and bias free panic stopping. With the
new master cylinder, brake booster, a major engine tune up and EFI
service, and A/C recharged, this car performed swimmingly and was a
pure blast to drive.
The 928's futuristic design and status as a luxury vehicle for the
eccentric jetset garnered it a fair share of screen time. It was
the star car in several classic big screen hits of the 1980s,
including "Weird Science", "Risky Business", ("OK who's the U boat
pilot?") and "Scarface" which is also one of the reasons why the
Porsche 928 became an icon and an enthusiast's dream. Gracing our
hallowed halls of Classic Auto Mall ripe for the picking.
