The gentleman this car was built for never intended on selling it and he had this car custom ordered and it was completed in 2019 and has only logged 2800 miles since completion. Unfortunate circumstances have created a a need to sell it as the owner lost his home in the California fires and was uninsured. Fortunately this car was not involved in the fire and the builder graciously agreed to help him sell this amazing car so that he will have the funds to rebuild his home.
This Porsche 356 Pre-A Continental coupe replica was built by the seller’s shop, Vintage Motorcars of California, and completed for the current owner in 2019. The car features a fiberglass body finished in ivory and mounted over a modified 1961 Volkswagen chassis, along with heated fixed-back seats upholstered in red vinyl, chrome 15″ Mangel wheels with white wall tires, driving lights, four-wheel disc brakes, and power windows. Power is from an air-cooled 1,776cc flat-four linked with a four-speed “Freeway Flyer” manual transaxle, and recent service included a valve adjustment and an oil change. Now showing 2,800 miles, this 356 Pre-A replica is offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with a clean California title listing it as a 1961 Volkswagen.
The fiberglass body is styled after that of a 1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Continental coupe and fixed to a box steel frame with a shortened 1961 Volkswagen Beetle floor pan. Finished in Ivory, this example is equipped with a single-grille engine lid, color-matched bumpers, rain gutters, driving lights with yellow lenses, pop-out rear windows, tinted taillights, and gold badging.
The cabin features heated fixed-back seats upholstered in red vinyl with matching side and door panels. Amenities include lap belts, squareweave carpets, power windows, Coco mats, an umbrella-style hand brake lever, and a locking glove box. A banjo-style wheel fronts VDO instrumentation that includes a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, gauges for engine temperature and fuel level, and a digital odometer showing just under 2,800 miles.
The air-cooled 1,776cc flat-four features a pair of 40mm Weber IDF carburetors, an Engle 110 camshaft, a 912 generator with a 356-style pulley, a Bosch 009 distributor with an electronic ignition module, and a 8.2:1 compression ratio. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed “Freeway Flyer” manual transaxle with a Sach clutch and pressure plate. Recent service included a valve adjustment and an oil change.
