in striking distance of its soft-top nemesis at Chevrolet. Ford
manufactured just 1,000 '94 Ford Mustang Cobra Convertibles. This
special edition wore handsome Indianapolis 500 graphics celebrating
the car's appearance at the 78th running of the classic American
race on May 29th the same year. At the time it was only Mustang's
third time as the pace car. Any time a special-edition car makes an
appearance, skeptics charge it's really just using graphics to sell
cars. They say the graphics may be special, but not the cars. In
the case of this Mustang Cobra, they'd be dead wrong. All 1,000 of
these Cobras were awash in added features, technology, power, and
handling enhancements. Hemmings details just some of these
upgrades: Engine: The 1994 Cobra's V-8 engine should be familiar,
with its 4.00 x 3.00-inch bore and stroke dimensions making 302
cubic inches. In Cobra guise, however, the 9.0:1 compression unit
was a modern EFI runner capable of 240 hp and 285 lb-ft of torque,
thanks to a unique upper and lower manifold induction
system....Ultimately, the re-tuned Cobra 5.0 could launch the Fox-4
platform to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. Chassis: Chassis
stiffness was paramount for the SVT crew. This was addressed on
convertibles by revising the front crossmember and adding a front
underbody X-brace... in conjunction with updates that included
enlarged rocker panel box sections, and other stress-bearing
sections, with thicker 2.3-mm steel. Interior: Cobra Pace Car
interiors were dressed in Saddle leather upholstery to match the
top, while a limited number of Cobra-specific items further
distinguished the breed from lesser models, such as white gauge
faces and a 160-mph speedometer. Clearly, these Cobra pace cars
were special, perfectly exemplified by the lovingly
well-maintained, very low-mileage example offered here. Showing
just under 10,000 miles-fewer than 400 miles per-year on
average-like new is no exaggeration. The car has been treated and
maintained to retain its value as a performance collectible. The
brilliant red exterior paint-common to all 1,000 pace cars-retains
its factory gloss across every body panel. The tan fabric
convertible top is without flaw. All glass, lighting lenses, chrome
trim-including 5-spoke wheel surfaces-show beautifully. The side
graphics feature a subdued Indianapolis 500 logo in black and
tasteful white and black lettering, all properly applied. A simple
white Indianapolis Motor Speedway logo appears on the rear deck.
Inside, the special-edition touches continue. The white-faced
instruments, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway logo in the front
headrests, the 5-speed manual shifter on the console, the
tan-leather upholstered, well-bolstered sport seats, the
tan-and-black door trim, the Cobra-branded steering wheel, the
160-mph speedometer all let occupants know they're inside a rare
Mustang. As to condition, literally every interior surface is
as-new. Under the hood, the 5-liter Cobra-branded V8 commands the
view. The engine bay includes all components, properly mounted, and
the condition is spotless. This continues to the car's
undercarriage. It couldn't have appeared much nicer the day it
rolled off the assembly line. The exceptional condition of this '94
Mustang Cobra Pace Car Convertible is
