Vehicle Description
1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe
The big change in 1986 came mid-year with the introduction of the
Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe. This two-door model featured a
fastback-style rear window, rear decklid spoiler, and other
changes, including revised gauges - with tachometer - and a
blacked-out grille.
For consignment and what makes the chrome-free Aerocoupe special is
that it was among the last of the NASCAR homologation specials and
with that it includes a unique, sloping rear backlight along with a
different decklid and its own unique spoiler that allowed Chevrolet
to enter races with a bit more of a chance against the sleek Fords.
Available only during the 1986 and 1987 model years, just 6,252
Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupes were built, the vast majority in 1987.
This 1986 model year saw only only 200 being produced, this car
being 198. Exterior finishes were limited to Black, Dark Maroon
Metallic, Silver Metallic, and White. Our example presents in white
and is a rare bird seldom seen in the wild!
Exterior
We can go right for the kill on this car with its 3 paneled sloping
rear glass and modified deck lid complete with a spoiler on top.
The body panels which are straight and minding their gaps nicely,
are all bathed in white paint, showing rust free. There is a nifty
maroon mid stripe which follows the contours of the wheel wells and
runs the gamut on either side, even wrapping around the front
blacked out grille. Body matching white neoprene crash bumpers are
on front and rear, and some black aero trim hangs below these
bumpers. Glass is all clear and framed in black, and aluminum
wheels are seen in very nice condition on all 4 corners.
Interior
With all the trappings that maroon crushed velour provides the
interior has been loaded up with it. On the doors it blends with
molded plastic armrest and pulls and even sports a tuck and roll
panel insert. Power locks and power window toggles can be seen.
Cloth bucket seats are in front, and a bench in the back with a
center console in maroon races to the dash between the seats. All
this floats in a sea of maroon carpeting which is like new. For the
Aerocoupe, additional gauges have been added to the dash which is
very clean on the front glass (plastic) and is fronted by a rally
steering wheel unique to this model. A square panel is embedded
into the center of the dash and houses the radio and temperature
sliders. You can also be entertained by a lineup of warning lights
which is just to drivers right of the gauges and will light up when
impending doom is afoot. Above is a nice tight felted maroon
headliner. On to the power plant...
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a very clean 5.0 liter (305ci) V8 which is topped
with a 4-barrel carburetor. On back is a 200R4 4-speed automatic
transmission with overdrive. Transferring power to the rear tires
is a 3.73 geared conventional 10-bolt axle.
Undercarriage
Slight road dirt but amazingly clean underneath with no rust, and
black undercoated surfaces. Solid floorpans and rockers. An F41
coded sport suspension also comes with this Aerocoupe that includes
a bigger front anti roll bar, an added rear anti roll bar, and
stiffer springs and shocks. Power brakes grace the front of the car
while power drums adorn the rear.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and it idled so smoothly I could not tell if it was
running, but alas it was! On the test track it was ultra-smooth,
handled nicely and has a low RPM cruise at speed. All functions
were working well.
A not often seen Aerocoupe with its unique rear glass and deck.
This one is a survivor, other than one repaint, which has been
driven but very well cared for. Just take in all the surfaces and
their straight, cleanliness, smudge free interior, extra gauges,
and powerful 5.0 4BBL, and can I put you into this car today?
