Vehicle Description
1992 Ford Mustang Convertible
Why is it called the "Fox" platform? I am unable to find a sure
reason why Ford identified this chassis as "Fox". Some people say
that it had something to do with VW's "Rabbit", but I can't confirm
that. I assume the Fox name has something to do with how Ford
downsized their vehicles. Ford's vehicles went from being big like
a cow to small and nimble like a Fox.
Here we go, a Fox body convertible 2.3 liter inline 4-cylinder
grocery getter. A very clean, well-kept car sweet 15" 10 hole
wheels right from the factory, and a little bit of get up and go.
If you are not excited yet, read on and fasten your seatbelt!
Exterior
Oxford White bathes this car and is in very nice condition with no
rust, and is wrapped up with body colored matching trim, all also
very nice. Color coordinated bumpers sport flow into a body colored
molding that runs the length of the car and meets back up with the
bumpers. As we move, let's stop at the nicely preserved black
canvas convertible top, complete with plastic, clear rear window,
also in nearly perfect condition. It moves up and down flawlessly,
and when down you get to enjoy the sun beaming on your face, and
the wind in your hair. 15-inch Ford 10 hole cast wheels are on all
4 corners and any trimmings, handles and a rear luggage rack have
been blackened.
Interior
A fine mix of velour broadcloth and vinyl wrapped in red, and
totally blemish free, cover the front bucket seats and rear bench.
Padding is excellent and these seats tend to grab you upon
entering. All seating sports nicely preserved red piping on the
borders. The red tonneau cover hides the black convertible top.
When in the down position, the cover makes it matchy matchy with
the interior. Awesome red seat belts keep you secure, and a red
molded vinyl console races past the buckets toward the dash. This
houses the black shifter, then making its way upward with space for
the A/C, and AM/FM/Cassette sound system. The dash is real red, and
in 90's square design, and the gauge cluster is very clean, with
the odometer showing 88,548 original miles. Fronting the dash is an
air bagged steering wheel with cruise control buttons. In their red
clad vinyl glory, door panels are nearly showroom, and house the
power windows, locks and sport mirror controls. It's tempting to
dig my bare feet in the wonderfully preserved red thick pile carpet
with great red floor mats protecting the carpeting, mm mmmmm
good!
Drivetrain
Not all Mustangs can be muscle cars, but this car uses an inline
4-cylinder engine in 2.3 liter displacement. It is an unrestored
engine bay so there is some corrosion and patina throughout. This
mill is fed by EFI and a 4-speed automatic (A4LD) transmission
throws power rearward to a Ford 7.5 inch 3.73 conventional rear
axle.
Undercarriage
A virtual candy land of gray coated steel frame and suspension,
with gray factory over sprayed tubs and rockers. This undercarriage
looks clean with no surface rust save for the driveshaft which is
typical. The front suspension is independent coil spring in front,
4 link with coil springs on the rear. Power disc brakes are on the
front, and power drums on the rear. All clean and green (actually
silver!) on the exhaust and mechanicals underneath.
Drive-Ability
I couldn't wait to get into this one, as a pristine Fox body has a
particular attraction to any car guy, but I get to drive it. It did
not disappoint with a quick lighted fire, and smooth idle, we are
off with a pop of the transmission into "D". Nice power, great
handling, and I felt like a million bucks behind this wheel. I had
to remind myself I was in a car with a convertible down and it's a
Mustang!
If you are in the market for some 1992 eye candy in the form of a
very nicely preserved Fox body 2.3 liter convertible, look no
further, as this one is a beauty. It is hard to find any real
discernible faults on this classic. Plus, it won't empty your
wallet in gas costs with the fuel efficient I-4.
