For Sale: 1940 Ford Convertible in Charlotte, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

Despite being best-known for their classic good looks and pure American swagger, early '40s Fords were the hot rod of choice for many a young gearhead who had a thirst for power and a need for speed. Today, spectacular Blue Oval resto-mods are much more common than their decades-built stature would lead you to believe. That means, to really turn heads, enthusiasts need unique cars that are exceptionally well-done. A fitting example would be this suave drop-top. Mixing a stout, dual-quad ZZ4 small block with substantial suspension upgrades and a comfortable custom interior, this all-steel Ford is a heck of a lot more fun than a restored-to-original car. And if you're looking for a great combination of timeless style and modern performance, it's a choice classic that simply can't be beat!

FORTY FORD FLASH

An all-steel asphalt champ that's benefitted from a detailed, ground-up restoration, this fabulous Forty is a supremely handsome street rod that's slick enough to create a one-car parade wherever it goes. The car's solid, well-aligned profile reflects deep black base that's sealed in mirror-like clear. And today, a close look at our high-resolution photos reveals a handsome payoff in the form of one slick Ford custom!

There really isn't much you can do to make an early '40s Ford more attractive. The car's streamlined styling was a homerun when originally introduced, and today, it's a stunning example of some of the strongest elements of the highly regarded Art Deco movement. At the front of this cherry custom, a louvered hood flows into a Handsome De Luxe grille that's guarded by a smoothed and tucked bumper. At the sides of that grille, sculpted fenders center chrome-trimmed headlights on glossy running boards. Above those boards, a stainless-trimmed profile floats shaved doors behind a delicate driver's mirror. At the top of that profile, monochromatic cloth caps a chopped and smoked greenhouse. And at the back of the car, a second smoothed and tucked bumper founds a shaved decklid between bright Blue Dot Taillights.

CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE

Flatheads are fun, but small blocks are better! Engineered by the experts at Chevrolet Performance, this classic's 350 cubic inch ZZ4 twists a stout 355 horsepower into 405 lb./ft. of gravel-churning torque - and that's before you even factor the engine's dual-quad induction! At the top of the bright red mill, Corvette-style air cleaners funnel breeze into coated Edelbrock 4-barrels and a fully polished intake. That intake, complete with a polished filler tube, swirls oxygenated fuel into hot aluminum heads, which get ignited by a stainless-trimmed distributor and quality Taylor wires. Resultant gases are jettisoned through a slick set of coated block hugger headers, which dodge a fully polished starter. Cooling comes courtesy of a big Walker radiator, which hangs a quick spinning puller fan between corrugated tubes and a polished expansion tank. The cam keeps spinning thanks to billet pulleys, which lap a polished water pump between a coated AC compressor and a polished Tuff Stuff alternator. The compliments keep flowing thanks to a highly detailed, well-executed engine bay that's garnished with braided hoses, louvered fenders and an engine-turned closeout panel. And everything, from the car's polished hinges and trick dipsticks to its billet hood latch and Corvette-themed valve covers , is set up to be as impressive as it is enjoyable!

FAT MAN FABRICATIONS FOR A FAT FENDER FORD

Park this Ford on a lift and you'll find a super clean undercarriage that's nice enough to show and tough enough to go. The choice motor twists a predictable 700R4 4-speed automatic, which spins a bright red driveshaft that's married to a bright red axle. That vivid pumpkin rides between parallel leafs and polished Carrera HYPER shocks, both of which integrate nicely into a sturdy Fat Man Fabrications frame. At the other end of that frame, a familiar Mustang II front-half centers modern rack-and-pinion between tubular control arms and modern coil-over-shocks. Quick stops are a cinch thanks to a familiar combination of disc and drums. Aluminized exhaust pipes spent gases through crisp IMCO mufflers. And at the corners, polished 5-spokes spin 195/60R14 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 235/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.

RED AND LEATHER

Peer through the car's tinted windows and you'll find a custom leather interior that's cool, clean and comfortable. Front and center, a broad split-bench seat follows a stainless-trimmed dash that's wraps clean Classic Instruments telemetry in a classy, engine-turned instrument panel. A polished spoon accelerator pedal joins a stainless-trimmed brake pedal to shade clean carpet, which floats a polished e-brake and a short shifter between custom side panels. The tunes keep bumping thanks to a hidden Custom Autosound CD player and a quartet of Memphis Audio speakers. The driver spins a trick Pete and Jakes steering wheel around a big Classic Instruments tach. And the passengers store parcels in either a custom-upholstered cargo hold or a custom-upholstered trunk.

Sure, there are a lot of '40s Fords on the market. But how many have been refined to this level of drivability and appeal? Mixing a great build with impressive power, custom upholstery and stylish aesthetics, this cool convertible is the kind of car that inspires smiles and turns heads! If you're looking for a super nice cruiser that's twice as much fun and twice as reliable as an all-original roller, you're looking at your next classic!
