Vehicle Description
1968 was the premier year for the new design for the Corvette,
which featured a completely new exterior and interior. Stylists
kept the hidden headlight treatment on the 1968 model, but the
units pop up rather than revolve in position. Also, the 1968 units
were vacuum operated, including the windshield wiper door, the
wheel rim width was increased from 6 inches to 7 inches, and the
battery was moved from the engine compartment to the rear storage
compartment. The advantage was realized in slightly better
front-to-rear weight distribution. Two new designs were the 427
hood treatment and the hidden windshield wipers. The push-button
door/lock handle was also a new one-year-only style. The side vents
were redesigned for 1968 but were still functional. The center
console served to hold seatbelts in place, rather than have them
clip onto a bracket as in 1967. Fiber optics were also used for the
first time to monitor all exterior lamps. This was the last
Corvette to have the ignition switch on the dash. 1968 was also the
year that Zora Arkus-Duntov was named Chief Engineer of the
Corvette. This particular 1968 Corvette has 76,242 actual miles
(mileage not indicated on the title) and came from the factory with
an L71 iron-block 427ci V8 engine outfitted with 11.1 pistons,
Holley triple 2-barrel carburetors (two R3659As and one R4055A)
plus a Winters aluminum intake manifold. A solid-lifter camshaft
was used, along with a set of closed-chamber rectangular-port
heads. The bottom was fortified with forged crankshaft and
four-bolt mains. Backing this matching-numbers engine is an M21
4-speed manual transmission and factory optioned posi-traction rear
end. No expense was spared on this Corvette's restoration, which
was done with originality in mind. Its original finish was removed,
and the body was prepared for paint with polyester primer,
block-sanded, smoothed and straightened, then sealed and painted
with base coat/clear coat paint in its original 976 LeMans Blue
color. It looks great with nice door gaps and panel fit. The
bumpers were rechromed, along with the windshield pillar caps. A
new date-coded front windshield was installed along with a dated
coded convertible top, carpet, dash pad, door panels and center
console, five bias-ply red line tires and body weatherstripping.
This Corvette sold new at Courtesy Chevrolet in Thousand Oaks, CA,
and includes its original Tank Sticker, Protect-O-Plate booklet,
owner's manual and receipts, and two sets of original keys. **
