In 1963, General Motors introduced an all-new Corvette that was designed to take on the best Europe had to offer. Some sports car aficionados had criticized the first-generation Corvette for putting style over substance when it came to handling and performance. That all changed with the debut of the so called “C2” second generation Vette. The frame had featured four-wheel independent suspension, available four-wheel disc brakes, and engines with optional fuel injection. The sophisticated chassis was wrapped in a gorgeous fiberglass body, designed in-house by Larry Shinoda and Pete Brock, led by GM’s brilliant design chief Bill Mitchell. Upon its debut, the C2 Corvette became an instant icon. With a range of powertrain and suspension options, buyers could spec their Corvettes to be everything from a scalpel-sharp sports car to a relaxed GT roadster, to a tire-melting muscle car. The C2 Corvette stands today as one of the most beautiful American cars of all time, and they remain hugely popular with anyone from the hobby-level enthusiast to the world-class collector.
