Vehicle Description
This 1966 Dodge Coronet 440 is an original 426 Hemi V8 coupe. Oh
yes! And not only has the hardtop body spent decades under good
care, but you also have a fresh rebuild of a correct-style
dual-quad Hemi in the engine bay. It all makes for the kind of car
that impresses with its vintage quality even before you show off
the awesome package under the hood.
The story we were told on this one was that the first owner was
also the long-term owner. He had the car restored a little more
than halfway through his time with the coupe. This was the kind of
careful owner that enjoyed it far more in the garage then ever out
on the road. That's how you get such a well-presented total package
today. The bright red paint is the factory-correct color, and the
bright finish does a great job of highlighting the best Mopar had
to offer. It's in the details, like the distinct profile of the
hardtop, full-length premium trim, wide chrome bumpers, sporty
kick-up in the rear fenders, and a well-creased hood that looks
like it funnels power right towards the center. It's full package
that crisply represents performance and substance, right down to
the Mopar road wheels with redline tires that so nicely match the
car's color.
Black interior always look great against bright red exteriors, and
this looks both highly correct and highly original. The Coronet was
a midsize Dodge this year, but that meant something quite different
in in '66. Two wide rows of bench seats give family and friends
plenty of space to spread out in this coupe. And if they're fans of
vintage cars, then they will definitely want to go for a ride. It's
a true time capsule atmosphere, right down to correct jack in the
trunk and the AM radio that's still cranking out the tunes. And
you'll love that this Dodge has a great classic feel from the
thin/grippy steering wheel, and Mopar's engineers gave all the
right gauges, too.
The VIN tells us this was born a true 426 Hemi car. It makes for a
hint of a sleeper style on this correct Cornet before Dodge
required these big motors to go only into high performance R/T
machines. When the original owner/caretaker passed, the factory 426
did not survive long thereafter. So there was a large investment
within the last year to locate a period-correct replacement Hemi
and have it freshly rebuilt. This includes a balance rotating
assembly, a Keith Black piston & ring set, polished crankshaft,
main bearings, valve job, lifters, timing set, oil pump, freeze
plugs, and gaskets. This fresh motor is properly topped off with
two four-barrel carburetors. It firs up almost like new, and you'll
love the deep rumble of the dual exhaust. But this car is built for
so much more. The clean undercarriage reminds you of the level of
total restoration to give you the right confidence to enjoy this
one. You've also got a versatile 3.55 rear end, new modern tires,
and a stout but smooth A727 Torqueflite three-speed automatic
transmission. It will all prove to you that this is a powerful
machine that feels firmly in your command.
Complete with owner's manual, you're looking at thunderous heart
Mopar that's also a great driver. It's a true Hemi coupe with a
terrific presentation and story - which is something we all want.
