1963 Superformance Corvette Grand Sport in Charlotte, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

The popularity of some of America's greatest muscle cars has grown to the point that components, and even complete replicas, are produced as entirely new assemblies. Of course, being an astute enthusiast, you already knew that. Think about it: when was the last time you saw an original Shelby Cobra? The replicar phenomenon gained even more momentum when Congress passed the Low Volume Motor Vehicles Manufacturers Act of 2015 and, finally in 2019, outlined regulations that will pave the way for niche builders to assemble complete cars. With that in mind, it seems perfectly logical that this killer Superformance Corvette, a GM-licensed continuation of Zora Arkus Duntov's legendary first-generation Grand Sport, happily prowls the streets as a 2018 Chevrolet. Wrapping sinuous fiberglass around tasteful leather, six forward gears and 6.2 liters of Chevrolet Performance LT-4, this exceptional Vette is fun to admire and a blast drive! And if you're looking to own a brutal track terror that combines thoroughbred provenance with state-of-the-art performance, it's a top candidate for your next classic!

BULL SHARK

Officially known as Superformance CGS 0017, this slick Corvette is the beneficiary of a recent, ground-up build that combined a roster of top notch components with an acute sense of quality. Thanks to Superformance's precise modern production molds, the car's lightweight body received a full anointing of first-generation Grand Sport character that oozes primal, mesomorphic appeal. That character manifests through Jet Black PPG two-stage that's been fully ceramic coated. And today, this sinister Chevy rolls as one of the most compelling classics to ever prowl pavement!

Even in small block guise, second-generation Corvettes have dramatic style. With increased ability comes increased sophistication, and every bit of this Grand Sport's exalted detailing contributes to both its form and function. At the front of the car, a deleted bumper makes way for a custom nose-clip, which centers a billet grille between small parking lamps and aerodynamic headlights. Above that clip, an aggressive Nassau hood leads monochromatic wipers and modernized glass. Below that glass, billet heat extractors parallel polished rocker guards under polished door handles and familiar bowtie mirrors. And at the back of the car, a Jet Black fuel filler fronts Grand Sport-style louvers, a colorful Grand Sport emblem and traditional, bullet-style taillights.

SUPERFORMANCE, MEET CHEVROLET PERFORMANCE

Not surprisingly, this Corvette's engine makes an art of combining exclusive yet universal appeal with reliable yet world-beating performance. Under the billet-trimmed hood you'll find GM's latest and greatest LT4: a supercharged, all-aluminum marvel that twists stout 10 to 1 compression into 650 horsepower and 650 lb./ft. of tire-shredding torque! Sourced directly from Chevrolet Performance's Connect and Cruise line, the brutal mill utilizes a 1.7 liter Eaton TVS blower, forged powder metal rods and forged aluminum pistons to flat out whip pretty much anything with four wheels. A perfect amount of oxygen flows from a Spectre filter element through a proven GM throttle body. That air meets fuel under Rotocast aluminum cylinder heads, which are built with lightweight titanium valves. When those heads open, spent gases float through custom headers, which roar through custom side-pipes. Standard dry-sump oiling, aided by an aluminum Superformance cooler, keeps lubrication familiar and easy. There's a beefy aluminum radiator that's helped by a big electric puller fan. And choice details include a polished breather, aluminum reservoirs and braided lines.

MAKING LEGENDARY BETTER

Park this Chevy on a lift and you'll find a sturdy Superformance tube chassis that, like the car's body, is built as an exact continuation of Chevrolet's five original Grand Sports. A tough Tremec T56 Magnum 6-speed twists torque to a cooled, era-correct differential that's finished with an era-correct locker. That first-class drivetrain rolls on a fully independent suspension, which follows modern coil-overs with fresh Bilstein shocks. Turning is a cinch thanks to power rack-and-pinion steering. Smooth and solid stops are provided by a modern Wilwood reservoir, which cinches a quartet of power-assisted calipers around a quartet of vented discs. A steady stream of octane comes courtesy of an LS3 fuel pump. Power flows through Pin Drive, Halibrand-style wheels, which spin 255/50ZR17 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 305/40R18 Nitto NT555R Extreme Drags. And the car's clean, Satin Black floors appear to have never seen inclement weather.

BUILT FOR TOURING

Pop the doors and you'll find an attractive Black interior that mixes the best aspects of modern convenience with the best attributes of vintage style. Front and center, high-back buckets sport taut leather hides. In front of those seats, a leather-wrapped dash hangs Superformance-spec Classic Instruments telemetry amid controls for Vintage Air conditioning and crisp Pioneer audio. At the edges of that dash, leather-wrapped door panels prop traditional handles in front of power-operated windows and power-operated locks. A short shifter sails plush carpet, which is planted on thick insulation. And the driver carves curves through an attractive GT Retro steering wheel, which laps a modern, tilting column.

Lust worthy, athletic and ready to rule Main Street, this impressive Corvette is an excellent combination of classic looks and incredible performance. Everyone loves top-notch C2s, but some are A LOT cooler than others. If you've been searching for an awesome muscle car to enjoy for years to come, you're looking at your next classic!
