For Sale: 1977 Porsche 911 in Scottsdale, Arizona

Vehicle Description

Porsche 911's are meant to be driven. Because of that its a rare thing to find a vintage example with less than 100k miles, much less 50k miles. Well, here we have a one registered owner 1977 Porsche 911S sunroof coupe with just over 48k original miles.

The 1977 model was the final year for the narrow G-Body cars. It's also the final year for the free revving 2.7 liter air cooled flat six. This car was optioned with factory sports seats, top of the line Blaupunkt component sound system, rear window wiper, 16" Fuchs wheels and AC delete, meaning this car has none of the AC system components scattered around its chassis. A forward looking decision considering it is now common knowledge that Porsche air conditioners of this era were anemic at best and a tiresome source of frequent maintenance. This wholly unmodified car is still equipped with its original factory air pump, thermal reactors and EGR making for easy registration in California where the car was originally sold.

Because odometer failure is very common on these cars, the only true way to confirm actual mileage is through third party service records that show a consistent progression of miles over the years. This car has those supporting documents all the way back to the original Bill of Sale. Combine that with its matching numbers status and what you have is a collector grade example.

The engine in this car is its original 2.7. It is rated at 165 horsepower 176 foot pound of torque. These are known to be spirited free revving motors that provide a very engaging driver's experience. Its extensive use of magnesium kept things cool and light but were also plagued with early failures. Any good running 2.7 still on the road today has likely had all of the requisite upgrades to address those infant mortality issues related to head studs, valve guides, chain tensioners, oil cooling and backfire protection. This has all been addressed on this car.

Recent work includes oil service, fresh Yokohama tires and valve adjustment. Headlights have been upgraded to H4's but the original sugar scoops remain with the car. Currently the sound system is inoperative, however the sunroof and all of the lights and switches are in working order. Original seats, carpet and dash are like new. This car is good to go.

Porsche's are prized by owners, collectors and investors alike. Prices fluctuate but have and will always trend upwards. Different eras trend at different times. The narrow G-Body cars sold between '74 and '77 are among the fastest trending models today. Buy this car, enjoy it, take care of it and if you have to sell it you will likely sell if for more than you bought it for. That is an objective observation. But it is the subjective that makes these vintage Porsches so iconic and coveted by their owners; it is the purely analog driving experience the car delivers. Nothing connects driver to road like an air cooled 911. I like to say you don't just drive them, you dance with them.
