From 1973 to 1977, the LeMans and other GM intermediates were much
larger in size than previous models due to evolutionary changes
that resulted in larger cars year after year and federally mandated
5 mph crash bumpers that added weight and length. During this
period, Pontiac's intermediate lineup included the base LeMans,
LeMans Sport Coupe, GTO (1973 only), Luxury LeMans (became the
Grand LeMans in 1975), the Euro-styled Grand Am from 1973 to 1975,
and the 1977 Can Am. Body styles were all based on GM's Colonnade
hardtop design for both sedans and coupes (no convertibles offered
after 1972) that included center pillars for improved rollover
safety standards but eliminated true hardtop design, along with
frameless windows similar to a hardtop. Two-door coupes featured
triangular "fixed" rear side windows that did not open, which were
covered with louvers on the LeMans and GTO sport coupes, and the
new Grand Am coupe.
This 1973 LeMans, along with all other GM intermediates, was new
from the ground up but retained the same wheelbase lengths of 112
inches for two-door coupes, and 116 inches for four-door sedans and
station wagons. All models featured the federally mandated
5-mile-per-hour front bumpers along with single headlights.
Handling capabilities were greatly improved on all models due to
new front-suspension components shared with the F-body Pontiac
Firebird and Chevrolet Camaro, improved rear-coil suspension and
bias-belted tires. Our consigner purchased this car from its
original owner in 2007 and at that time it had a mere 34K miles.
Always garage kept, it remains in very good condition, it now shows
44,578 original miles.
Exterior
Ascot Silver bathes the stylized body panels that are rust free and
mostly devoid of any faults, save for a dent or two which are
minor. Gaps are well minded on the steel slabs throughout, and a
burgundy vinyl top with some venting on the B pillar and no rust
underneath anywhere is on. From its sleek front beak to its pinched
design rear it remains sporty and shiny with its accenting chrome.
15-inch Pontiac Rally 2 wheels are on all 4 corners and all is
looking great on this multiple award winning car for your possible
taking.
Interior
In contrast and as a compliment to the exterior Ascot Silver, the
interior is bathed in Oxblood colored vinyl, wood applique and
chrome trimming. Door panels are near perfect and in plenty of the
Oxblood with a peppering of chrome knobs and actuators with some
wood accenting applique. Inside seating is just beautiful with all
tuck and roll vertical pattern Oxblood vinyl, high backed buckets
for the front and a bench for the back. A square and rectangle
design center console races past the buckets and dies underneath
the dash. Here we see more molded vinyl and plastic in Oxblood
along with some very clean instruments in a red field and a lower
band of wood applique. An original steering wheel is fronting the
dash, red carpeting is flooding the floors, and an Oxblood vinyl
headliner is above. Niiiiiice!
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a shiny detailed and well-kept 350ci L30 V8
engine. There is a single 2-barrel carburetor atop, and a TH350
3-speed automatic on back. The rear axle weighs in as a 10-bolt
2.73 gear ratio setup. All is nice and shiny under here with nice
corrosion free bolt ons throughout.
Undercarriage
With only 44K original miles on the undercarriage is definitely
rust free, and even dirt free, with solid floorpans and frame
construction. A nice even undercoating covers most surfaces.
Independent coil springs for the front and a 4 link with coil
springs on back, with power disc brakes on front and power drums
for the rear can be noted when looking underneath. A nice shiny
dual exhaust makes its way from front to rear too.
Drive-Ability
This car started and ran like it was new and looks the part too.
All functions were working well, and it performed as it should on
the test track. Nice acceleration, good bias free braking, and
smooth comfy cruise.
Adorned with its AACA-HCOF badge, you know you are in rarefied air
with this low mileage cream puff, preserved very nicely from 1973.
The colors are just right, the options are really nice, and all is
good baby bear.
