Vehicle Description
1988 Pontiac Fiero GT
From the Spanish word the "fierce one," Fiero was introduced to the
American market in 1984 as a gas saving alternative to the
Corvette. A mid-engine 2 seated sports car that had all the initial
problems sorted out by the last year of offering it to the public
in 1988. The suspension had been upgraded, and the GT version came
as a 6-cylinder 2.8 liter with a Getrag 5-speed transmission,
making the car finally what the designers wanted it to be, a
somewhat powerful, good handling mid engined car, that got good gas
mileage.
"Oh Beautiful! For spacious skies, and amber waves of grain...."
Within our midst is a patriotic themed 1988 Fiero GT bathed in
mostly white but with some extra airbrushing of flapping flags
across the hood, and red trimmings and red snowflake wheels, you
will be standing proud and maybe even saluting as this consignment
buzzes by.
Exterior
A beneficiary of a frame up restoration now rust free laser
straight panels are bathed in white. The aerodynamic look persists
with the hidden headlights, neoprene integrated bumper, small air
duct on rear quarter, and a rear spoiler atop the rear deck. A
nifty patriotic flag stretches across the hood at an angle and is
neatly airbrushed. A red side spear which also wraps around the
rear of the car is now on, along with red powder coated Pontiac
snowflake styled wheels. Other accents also in red can be seen with
the rear engine vents and the drip molding above the windows which
are trimmed in black. Dual exhaust tips peek out from under the
rear roll pan and a smoked plastic covered rear taillight trimming
stretches across the back.
Interior
Making use of red and white on the door panels and this is just a
taste of things to come on the interior. Inside this plays out
beautifully with the styled high back buckets with red inserts and
white bolsters all in beautiful smooth leather in excellent
condition. A two tone central console races up to the square and
rectangle design dash, all new and custom fabricated in red and
white. The dash takes on this quality as well, even down to the
white-faced gauges with red accenting, all within a wood burl
applique' instrument cluster background. The center of the dash has
been reworked to the red and white motif too and utilizes more wood
applique. A note about the sound system, it is a good one with a
CD/DVD/MP3 receiver, a Sony Xplod 600-watt 4/3 channel power amp
(XM 554ZB) neatly stored behind the engine bay. Also peppering the
cabin are 2 Sound Storm in dash 120 watt speakers, and a 10 inch
subwoofer.
Drivetrain
Midway through this car is the beautifully restored engine bay
which includes a rebuilt V-6 173ci 2.8 liter EFI engine sporting a
Crane cam, TRW power forged pistons, HD valve springs and clips and
a high volume oil pump. Some more red powder coating is seen under
here and a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission with a rear drive
ratio of 3.61. Beautiful presentation.
Undercarriage
The hits just keep on coming for the undercarriage with solid bald
steel floorpans and unibody construction. no rust seen and a few
more parts have been powder coated in red. Independent suspension
on all 4 corners, and power disc brakes are also present all
around.
Drive-Ability
Hopping in I felt like Joey Chitwood with the red and white
interior all customized. She fired right up, and it was off to the
test track where it took off like a SAM missile, handled like it
was on rails, and provided a smooth cruise and effortless shifting.
All functions were performing beautifully and as they should.
The beneficiary of a creative ground up restoration, this Patriotic
themed Fiero from 1988 looks and performs wonderfully. After
experiencing it, I had a fleeting thought I should file my taxes,
or sign up for the Air Force, although instead I just gave a
salute... Thanks Uncle Sam!
