Launched in the United States during the spring of 1998 as a 1999 model, the all-new 996-generation Porsche 911 marked a revolution in the hallowed halls of Stuttgart. As the first 100-percent new 911 since 1964, it was summarized best by Excellence magazine editors as larger yet lighter and more powerful, more refined, more aerodynamic, and easier to drive than the 993. Among the changes, the 996-series 911 featured a water-cooled flat-6 engine for the very first time and in addition to providing greater power and scope for future development, this new powerplant was easier to assemble and allowed compliance with stricter noise and emissions standards. Initially displacing 3.4 liters and soon upsized to 3.6 liters, this new short-stroke engine was made for high operating speeds and with 11.3:1 compression, delivered 315 BHP at 6,800 rpm in standard tune, giving the new 911 the power and performance to match its sleek new looks. The new 911s body was designed by Pinky Lai, the victor of an internal contest organized by Porsche design chief Harm Lagaay to design the new car, designated Typ 996, as well as the new Boxster, Typ 986. Visual similarities primarily at the front and bodysides of both cars saved a great deal of money and promoted a familial resemblance among the senior and junior Porsche stablemates. In particular for the 911/996, better aerodynamics and lower rear-end lift were designed-in benefits of the new body style, along with lower overall weight, sharpening overall performance. Produced during September 2002, this 2003 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa is a top-quality example of these excellent road cars that retains its all original Midnight Blue Metallic paint finish over Graphite Grey leather upholstery. Backing the powerful 3.6-liter engine is a 6-speed manual transmission for a truly sporting drive. Just 64,000 miles have been covered from new, all progressively documented by the clean Carfax report that accompanies the sale of this excellent 911 Targa. Additional factory-original features and options include Supple Leather Front and Rear upholstery (Code 982), Graphite Grey Floor mats (Code M6P), Xenon Headlamp Package (Code P74), Porsche Headrest Crests (Code XSC), and Aluminum/Leather Shifter and Handbrake Handle (Code Y06), plus 18-inch Light alloy wheels (Code 411) with Colored Porsche-crested wheel caps ((Code 446).
