Vehicle Description
1964 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible
Muscle car is an American term for high-performance cars, usually
but not limited to rear-wheel drive and fitted with a large and
powerful V8 engine. The term originated for 1960s and early 1970s
special editions of mass-production cars which were designed for
drag racing.
For consignment a former Barrett-Jackson purchased car (2013 Hot
August Nights Auction, Reno Nevada) and a California car all its
life. This was known in the day as a total performance vehicle,
this Dyno Tuned car will put out 470HP on high test gas. Nicely
presenting with great paint, and a new convertible top, a highway
cruiser or street bruiser, it will put some wind in your hair.
Exterior
With recently re-chromed front and rear bumpers, dual headlights
and an undulating horizontal ribbed grille as well as turbine style
round taillights this is truly a jet age car. Straight steel panels
are bathed in red, and a nice badged trim spear runs from front to
back in the mid section, tastefully breaking up the red. A chromed
rocker trim is seen and red steel wheels with chrome center hubcaps
wrapped in blackwalls gives this car a somewhat unassuming
look...but beware! A new convertible top with a glass window moves
up and down flawlessly.
Interior
Black tuck and roll vinyl inserts which have piping wrapped in the
form of a bomber style bucket, but in reality the seats are a
squared off split bench. This same motif is on the rear bench. Some
areas of tearing have been taped over with black electrical tape.
Door panels are also covered in black vinyl, some ribbed and some
smooth with two swooping chromed trim pieces breaking the panels
up. The dash is all original looking and has been restored, as has
the original steering wheel. Black carpet covers the floors and
Galaxie embroidered floor mats are seen in the front of the
passenger compartment. A couple of aftermarket gauges have been
added which hang below the dash.
Drivetrain
This "top loader" 4-speed manual equipped car comes with a big
block FE 406ci V8, and has dual Holley 4-barrel carbs which were
recently rebuilt. C4AE 6090 427 high riser heads are covered by
chromed valve covers. As noted, the engine was also "refreshed" and
dyno tuned to run on high test gas. A chromed trademark open air
cleaner allows plenty of fresh clean air to flow to the dual quad
setup below. A 4-speed manual top loader transmission is attached
to the back of the mill. Power to the rear wheels goes through a
Ford 9-inch 3.50 rear.
Undercarriage
Plenty of patina surfaces to look at underneath, all with little to
none of any signs of rust. Independent coil springs upfront, and
leaf springs on the rear provide the suspension. Disc brakes are on
the front, and drums on the rear. A good-looking flow master
exhaust makes its way from engine to tailpipes.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and smooth idler, this car left us with no
disappointment. It can cruise, and it can accelerate on demand.
Everything is functioning on the dash, including the clock. The
clutch was very stiff and took some serious effort to push it to
the floor, although the car shifted quickly and smoothly and
provided a smooth ride.
A nicely done car, certainly not perfect, but a driver, never a
garage queen. Good exterior paint, and a black vinyl interior, with
a powerful mill and top loader transmission, we are ready to go to
hyperdrive. Meet George Jetson...
