Vehicle Description
An exceptionally rare drop-top that gives you a unique appearance
and trusty components underneath. That's the appeal of owning a
classic like this 1985 Mercury Capri ASC McLaren convertible. The
fact that it's also a loaded, low-mileage, and affordable V8
classic is just the cherry on top.
Those who don't know the history of these ASC McLarens are always
curious about what this convertible is. And those already in the
know just say "WOW!" That's because these are a rare creation.
Costing nearly as much as a Lincoln coupe when new, there were less
than 260 of these convertibles produced in 1985. The reason for the
expense is because the drop-top masters at ASC were contracted to
give the premium Mercury Capri its own upper-level convertible.
This included a new ground effects kit and a unique deck lid. This
one is even more unique, because it borrows the face of another
rare Ford, the Merkur coupe. This special convertible looks premium
thanks to a well-done respray that gives the red a good gloss and a
deep shine. It's a two-seater with a flush-fitting tonneau when the
top is town, just like a Mercedes SL. But we actually like it even
more with the top up, because the profile is truly unique compared
to its Mustang and Cougar siblings.
Inside this one provides the right kind of luxury mixed with
performance. It's loaded with all the right equipment like power
windows, power locks, AM/FM/cassette stereo, and provisions for air
conditioning (will need servicing to blow cold again.) The wood
paneled dash has plenty of great features, including a full gauge
package. And since many of the main components are sourced from
Ford/Mercury, it's still easy to service this low-batch custom. And
while its rarity means you'll love it for collecting, you also
won't be able to resist taking it out for plenty of weekend
adventures. After all the supple leather bucket seats and upgraded
sports steering wheel on a tilt column make for a great driver's
classic.
As special as this car is inside and out, we love that under the
hood is a trusty 5.0-liter. This is believed to be original to the
car, and it was one of the best V8s of the day. So components are
plentiful, and that keeps this rare ASC McLaren easy to maintain.
In fact, you can tell from the pics that there have been a few of
the right upgrades. It includes a Champion aluminum radiator, MSD
ignition, and a Brawler four-barrel carburetor. And you'll love
taking this one out on the road thanks to a suspension package that
helped this car earn the McLaren part of its name. Plus, the power
steering, power front disc brakes, and four-speed automatic
transmission w/overdrive make it a great a great anytime driving
choice.
