Vehicle Description
1972 Land Rover Series III 88
The Land Rover is one of the most iconic off-road vehicles ever
created. . . attributes that stay true to its original design and
identity.
The 1972 Series III offered here is a good original example that
would make a great fun vehicle for the beach, off road or daily
driver. it comes with a full hard top that is removable for top off
driving and a brand-new canvas top, set of hoops and tailgate
assembly. Mechanically it runs and drives fine. Overall it's a
great Series III 88 that can be enjoyed in all seasons, winter fun
kept warm by new Mansfield Heater or top off beach cruising, urban
or the wilds, this truck is considered the best built of all the
series produced, so I guess you could say "Born Free" as free as
the wind blows (This model of truck was featured in that
movie!)
Exterior
An all "aluminium" body bathed in patina pastel green panels cover
the iconic exterior of this truck. The front with its large rounded
fenders with the lighting behind protective screens allows you to
cruise through the urban jungle without fear of losing your way at
night. A deeply inset grille bordered by the short hood with the
spare attached right to the middle of the hood, a nicely aged front
bumper with a tow hitch and dual steel loops for extra pulling in
or out of trouble are attached. Fold down the windshield and you
will have clear and open access to photograph any of the flowers,
fauna and scenic views you may encounter on your way to soccer
practice. Some flip down steps are attached to the frame on the
underside of each single door, and the brackets for these show some
heavier rust...careful! On back is a flat panel with a wide door
for access to the cargo area, another utilitarian bumper with
another hitch set up, and more screened lighting. Yet another spare
tire is attached to said door. All wheels and tires show some
slight rust on them, are painted in the white to match the top, and
are wrapped by radials. An additional 4 rims and tires are
included.
Interior
Seating for 3 upfront with 3 buckets stretching from simple door
panel to simple door panel. Load the trio in the front, and in the
back dual benches are mounted on either side of the cargo area
stretching from the front seating, to the rear door, and room for
another 6 adults. All seats are in serviceable condition in black
vinyl. The simple dash has all the essential gauges and is looking
good behind the original steering wheel. Rubber flooring, when
present, shows signs of wear. In front of the driver and passenger
is an open tray for storage and some and two air vent levers. The
dash in this truck has openings for engine gauges; they are
supplied but not installed. And now back to our search for the
elusive white elephant!
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 2.25 liter inline 4-cylinder fed by a 1-barrel
Weber carburetor. Some patina and wear are seen in here as it is
the original engine. On the back is dual range 4-speed manual
transmission and Superwinch Overdrive unit and a Rover rear axle
with 5.40 gears. This is a gasoline fired engine so obtaining
petrol should not be a problem.
Undercarriage
Leaf springs and power drums all around with slight surface rust,
but all structurally solid. New shocks, leaf springs and various
replaced parts are detailed in a binder with photographs and
records that provide the maintenance history of the current
consigner, and give you and update as to the all current status on
mechanicals which is very handy.
Drive-Ability
I climbed in with my partner in crime and we were off to the wilds
of Morgantown, PA. Here we climbed over hill and dale with ease and
tackled the highway and all held together nicely. Keep in mind that
comfort wasn't the primary consideration in the design of this
truck but overall it is a comfy ride and cruise unless you are in
Utah climbing Elephant hill, which BTW has a Land Rover II 88
standing by to pull lesser vehicles out of trouble.
Navigation of the suburban and urban jungles is becoming
increasingly difficult these days so why not do so in the ultimate
vehicle: The Land Rover Series III 88. Seating for 9, plenty of
cargo space, an extensive list large list of extra parts and
accessories that are included with purchase, and even a roof rack
will come with this truck, so you have no excuse to forget anything
as you strike out on your next adventure!
