Returning from Europe in 1938, Edsel Ford was inspired by the
glamorous coach built cabriolets there and soon collaborated with
Ford designer Bob Gregorie on a new two-door, four-seat car based
on the V-12 Lincoln-Zephyr that revitalized Lincoln just a few
years before. The distinctive custom Lincoln featured a lowered
hood line and cowl with extended front fenders, while lengthened
and skirted rear fenders matched the bustle-style trunk, and the
convertible featured formal Victoria-style blind rear quarters.
Edsels approval was enthusiastic and swift and work began to
complete the car in time for his winter vacation in Florida. Since
there was insufficient room for a trunk-mounted spare tire, the car
received its signature feature, a rear-mounted Continental
spare-tire. The prototype was completed in less than six months and
was the hit of the winter season among Edsels friends in
Florida.Initially named the Lincoln-Zephyr Continental, the car
entered production as a 1940 model and initial success spurred
continued production for 1941, with 1,250 built 850 Coupes and 400
Cabriolets. Film and business icons clamored for a Continental of
their own and some of the eras most renowned designers, including
Frank Lloyd Wright and Raymond Loewy, bought Continentals
themselves, providing perhaps the ultimate form of admiration.
Avidly sought-after by elite society when new and by smart
collectors today, the original Continental firmly re-established
Lincolns exclusivity and prestige and it remains an automotive
design icon today. Rightly, the original Continentals are
recognized as Full Classic automobiles by the Classic Car Club or
America (CCCA) for their enduring excellence and they enjoy almost
universal show and event eligibility. This gorgeous 1941 Lincoln
Continental Cabriolet is a former part of a private automobile
collection and comes to market with a fresh detail and
reconditioning process including installation of a set of new
tires. Truly road-worthy as well as show-ready, it features
wonderful colors including Mayfair Maroon paint, complemented by a
Black canvas convertible top with smart Red welting. The
power-operated convertible top is operated by twin electric motors
and other factory features include an AM radio and electric clock.
Confirming this very rare 1941 Lincoln Continentals overall
excellence, it bears CCCA Badge no. 2386 and stands as a former
First Prize Winner in 2001, 2005, and 2006. Among the many
accolades given to the original Continental, it has been listed by
Time magazine as one of the 100 best-designed commercial products
of all time, and this top-of-the-line 1 of 400 Cabriolet is
certainly a best of the best example indeed. See it for yourself by
